will try the MAF disconnect idea and see how it runs, maybe even go for a clean as well as of course a lot cheaper than the MAF sensor!

I am looking for some advice on replacing the MAF sensor on my 996 C4.

Sometimes if the MAF is faulty a car will run better with it unplugged.

The reason I am looking to replace it is I am regularly getting both the ABS and PSM lights coming on, which I am told is a pretty sure sign that the MAF needs replacing as the PSM system uses some info from it.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I had teh same problem with my C4 once and the new MAF didn't fix it.
Hi. I am looking for some advice on replacing the MAF sensor on my 996 C4. I have looked around a bit on the net and realise there is lots of talk about cleaning or replacing etc, but I was wondering if it is a simple case of plugging in the new one or if there is any set up procedure that is required. The reason I am looking to replace it is I am regularly getting both the ABS and PSM lights coming on, which I am told is a pretty sure sign that the MAF needs replacing as the PSM system uses some info from it. Anyone done this job themselves? Also where is the best place to purchase a genuine bosch one? ( I don't fancy using a copy part off ebay!!) Thanks.
Might be worth getting an Independent to just check that first... I had teh same problem with my C4 once and the new MAF didn't fix it. Turned out to be a brake pedal switch (costing less than €10.00)! The dealer in Stuttgart (I was visiting the factory at the time) didn't even charge me any labour as it only took about 5 minutes to replace.
For the sake of a tenner, it might be worth replacing that first anyway?
Thanks Wattie, good tip! Still need to find myself a decent inpedendant that I can trust without spending a small fortune on things that don't need replacing! The fault does appear under breaking and then once on it stays on. On restart though fault clears until a later break application, so you could be onto something!
Whereabouts are you?
Sounds more like a 'brake' electronics issue than MAF to me if it happens when you brake... Could also be an ABS sensor on one of the axles, but the pedal switch is so cheap, I would start there if you can't get someone to check it for you first.
lloyd six is your man for all things bosch; send him a PM if it turns out to be your MAF
EDIT:
in the intervening 5 mins while i made coffee he has spotted your plight already!
If the MAF is faulty you will get symptoms such as poor idling or acceleration. A faulty MAF give incorrect readings about airflow through the inlet which causes the ECU to give the wrong fuel mixture.
If you dont have any performance issues it's a pretty safe bet that the MAF is not faulty.
Hi
I agree. One way to test is to unplug the MAF and see if the car runs differently. Sometimes if the MAF is faulty a car will run better with it unplugged.
It has never worked for me but many people have had success with the cleaner that you can buy from Maplin. You just spray the wire. Some people go for a very gentle earbudding as well.
Best of luck
Berni
The car does run a little lumpy when cold. As far as acceleration is concerned it still seems quick enough but to be honest its my second car so when I do drive it, it always seems quick! will try the MAF disconnect idea and see how it runs, maybe even go for a clean as well as of course a lot cheaper than the MAF sensor! Already in touch with Lloyd, thanks! :thumb:
How often do these things go wrong? Have noticed in the pile of receipts I have that is was replaced back in 2006 and have done approx 15000 miles since then. Is it more liklely to fail if the car is used less thank average and sat in the garage for a few weeks at a time?
