Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Last weekend I set about the grim task of replacing the spark plugs..my 996 car has turned 90k and i can see no record of the plugs ever being changed.. Not sure what to do i read various posts and info on the net not one site actually tells you what to do.. some mention stuff that simply is not true. :dont know: So it set about the job.. :lock: The plugs are located basically on either side of the engine behind the rear wheels. So to gain access you need to remove the back wheels YOU DO NOT NEED TO REMOVE THE MUFFLERS, HEAT SHIELDS OR AIRBOXES THATS ALL NONSENSE. :hand: What you need: :thumb: A 16mm extended plug socket 1/2inch short extension bar 1/2 inch flexi 1/2 inch rachet a 1/4 inch rachet Alan key rachet set A short 4mm alan key A long 4mm alan key Unplug the HT leads from the spark plug heads by sliding up the weather sleeve and the pushing on the latch on the plug. Remove the spark plug rubber head caps... start with the front one as you can get square on to them through the wheel arch. remove the alan headed screws, two to each cap. Withdraw the plugs caps by pulling them out, you may need to pull them out at an angle were the clearance is tight. To remove the plugs you need to assemble the rachet in the plug holes as you put it in . the extension bar 16mm plug socket and rachet is too long to get in the back two holes fully assembled. Slide the plug socket in first, slide the extension bar in, then attach the rachet. Once the plug is free from the holder you need to dissamble the rachet, extension bar and socket as you withdraw it, hoping the plug comes out inside the plug socket The hardest thing is getting your hands in.. It takes abot 4 hours to do the job.. make sure you dont wrag the alan key heads when taking the plug caps off.. make sure the alan key is seated properly and square.. Hope this helps people do this difficult job.. :thumb:

POST 2Original post

Can you get the plugs in to get them finger tight or is that purely a ratchet job ? Wouldn't like to get one of those cross threaded ! Nice to know though

POST 3Original post

whom told you this as it only applies to turbo's and gt2 and you need the spark plug socket with small extension on to get them finger tight AWY

POST 4Original post

Is the car not due a major 96K service soon anyway? Why did the plugs need replacing was there a problem with them? TB

POST 5Original post
