If they weren't scuffed i wouldn't be desperate to change but with planning to get them re-done anyway i wouldn't choose the current finish.

Suggestion

A GT3 should not suffer too much curbing as it is not usually a daily driver, however when changing tyres you need to make sure your usual fitter is extremely carefull to not nick them.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi folks, Recently bought a speed yellow GT3 and the wheels have a few marks and I'm not keen on the finish anyway. So, current look - I'm thinking either anthracite (can't find an example) or solid black, like this - Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Exel wheels did these for me. It's a Porsche colour as used on 997.1 turbo wheels.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Like the look of that, hard to tell from pics, is it Grey? Not sure if the black just makes the wheels disappear a little hence Anthracite Grey being one of my ideas. Cheers, Chris

POST 4Original post

I had Exel do my 996T wheels in GT silver (as on turbo S), which is a few shades darker than standard, and looks very good.

POST 6Original post

I quite like your current look - they are silver lips?

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ye silver surrounds, black centres. If they weren't scuffed i wouldn't be desperate to change but with planning to get them re-done anyway i wouldn't choose the current finish. Would like to keep the white GT3 writing on the centre caps regardless though (not really obvious in picture) and have even toyed with doing the writing in yellow but not sure if that would potentially be naff.....

POST 8Original post

Nice car Chris. As for the wheels, I don't know. Silver wouldn't look right really but I'm not a fan of black. I'd be stumped! Best colour for the GT3 though.

POST 10Original post

I have two sets of wheels for mine. One set is in gloss black with the GT3 in the centre caps picked out in Speed Yellow, it looks really good and not naff in my mind. I also fitted the Porsche 3mm spacer shims which make the wheels fill the arches better. Nice looking car BTW

POST 11Original post

Silver shows off those gorgeous wheels in my view. Black hides them and looks chavvy. Sorry!

POST 21Original post

Just have both, silver (original) and black for your mood changes!

POST 23Original post

On a bit of a tangent - I have a set of all black mk2 alloys which I have been meaning to turn to oem silver. However, if someone already has a silver set and interested in a black set then a straight swap may be cheaper/more convenient. Alternatively, if someone else likes the OP's black with silver rim, and the OP likes all black, we could do a 3 way swap

POST 24Original post

I have a spare silver set to go on a Riviera Blue car but am not sure if I should just stick with the silver. They are pretty much for track only as they have Michelin Cups whilst the road/wet track are anthracite I think - dark metal grey at any rate. Too many choices and if it were a swap too easy. Hmmmmmm........... Pip

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm reasonably sure I'm going for anthracite as a comprise.... anyone had it done around Glasgow, mailed exel to ask what services they offer in Scotland but haven't heard back. Cheers, Chris

POST 27Original post

Iv just had the wheels on my cobalt blue 997.1 GT3 done in shadow chrome (same as the old E39 M5 wheels) by the wheel specialist in Glasgow. I will post some pics up tomorrow.

vallance5 said: Iv just had the wheels on my cobalt blue 997.1 GT3 done in shadow chrome (same as the old E39 M5 wheels) by the wheel specialist in Glasgow. I will post some pics up tomorrow. Wow. That's sounds interesting. I have an E39 M5 too and the finish brings out a nice liquid metal texture. The only concern in my view is that the finish can be a bit fragile to knocks. A GT3 should not suffer too much curbing as it is not usually a daily driver, however when changing tyres you need to make sure your usual fitter is extremely carefull to not nick them. Once damaged, it can spread depending how well the chromium paint is applied. Love to see the pics though.

POST 29 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Some pics would be great, is that the place up in ek? Be interested to hear your opinion on service etc as well. Cheers, Chris vallance5 said: Iv just had the wheels on my cobalt blue 997.1 GT3 done in shadow chrome (same as the old E39 M5 wheels) by the wheel specialist in Glasgow. POST 30Original post

Off out to take some pics. Yes it is the one in EK. The work they carried out was good however I would not recomend them as the customer service is terrible and my wheels were not properly balanced so had to go back to get then redone. I think I will be trying the one in Cumbernauld as I have heard good things about them. Pics to follow..

POST 31Original post

For reference, I had my M5 shadaow chrome done at Lepsons in the South East. Very happy with their work.

POST 32Original post

Pics as promised. Apologies for crappy iPhone pics will take some proper ones soon. I took some pics inside and outside as the wheel changes colour depending on the lighting conditions. In bright sunlight they look almost completely silver but in overcast and night time conditions they look much darker. Let me know what you think. Cheers. POST 33 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

They look excellent, really suit the car and finish looks good. Just a little too "light" for my car I think though. I popped into chameleon in rutherglen but they only do anthracite (or silver / black) with no different shades... What's the name of the place in Cumbernauld? Out of curiosity, are the Porsche centre caps standard? I have GT3 logos on mine but not sure whether that's aftermarket? Thanks for taking the pics and lovely looking car! Chris

POST 34Original post

On a GT3 the wheel centres have the GT3 logo. Porsche crest centres on a GT3 are not standard.

Chris The place in Cumbernauld is also The Wheel Specialist as its just a franchise. Its the Glasgow North one and the EK one is GLasgow South. Yes my centre caps are not standard. The wheel specialist colour matched the silver sections of the cap to the rest of the wheel. As for being too light they do a similar finish to mine but darker called "smoked chrome". I went for the lighter colour so that it wasn't too far away from the original finish. Edited by vallance5 on Wednesday 7th May 16:10 Edited by vallance5 on Wednesday 7th May 16:10

POST 36 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I work not far from Cumbernauld, will pop in and ask check them out next week. Good to hear they can do the centre caps as well, assuming the franchise offer similar services. Thanks, Chris

POST 37Original post

mollytherocker said: Does this help? Perfect! Looks so much cleaner and original. Black wheels are starting to look dated.

POST 38Original post

vallance5 - love the colour of your wheels. Really subtle. Would look fab on a white GT3 :-)

POST 39Original post

mollytherocker said: Does this help? I had satin black on my old SY GT3 but think I'd go with the standard silver if I was doing it again. If you're going black though I'd personally go matt or satin instead of gloss.

POST 41 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thought I'd update the outcome.. After much pondering and procrastinating I made a decision and got the wheels done....graphite grey, really happy with the result, dark in the dark, light when the sun hits them.... Thoughts?
