Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
The culprit was the fuel lines interfering with the float arm.
Leading evidence: 'fuel lines interfering' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fuel lines interfering' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace but i think it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My 996 is basically back up to par since I bought it, minus the fact that I hit a deer a few months back and just finished the rebuild myself, minus the paint which will be coming soon.
Since getting the car (it sat for 7-8 years). The fuel level has been off. Ill fill up and the gauge will not go past 1/2 a tank and will run out of fuel before the 1/8 reserve tank. Ive been meaning to take the pump and level sender out to make sure its not jammed or restricted by anything, but is leaving it close to empty, taking the negative off the battery for about 10-15 mins, and then filling it back up a viable option to recalibrate the level sender? Assuming the level sender is fine of course. Here are some pictures of the journey so far.
This is the first time I have seen a 996 with sun damaged paint. Lol
Nice to see it restored!
If I were you, just replace the fuel pump. It's old. Even though it's working now, it can fail and leave you stranded somewhere. Not worth the risk. It will probably fix the fuel level issue, too.
I recall once that i porsche had a TSB about the plastic lines in the tank being placed in the wrong position and it will limit the travel of the sender. If someone has replaced the pump, perhaps something is limiting the sender? You could remove it, allow the sender to hang all the way down and turn on the key....it should read empty.....then move it all the way up....tuen on the key and it should read full....just a thought
I replaced my fuel pump and had this same issue. The culprit was the fuel lines interfering with the float arm. It takes a bit of fenagaling but you can get it back together so that the lines are out of the way. If I recall, the line ended up being toward the back side of the tank while the float arm was pointed toward the drivers side. That made the fuel lines clear.
