Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 997.1 Gt3, but before i brought the car 22 months ago i was looking at a 2008 Gallardo spyder. It was a little out of my price range.
I still fancy one but the GT3 is such a fabulous car. Thrills me everytime i drive it.
Performance wise i dont think ther is much in it by the cars i have had a play with.
I know running cost will be more than the Porsche, plus i have renewed the warranty a couple of months ago. It now has warranty until November 2016.
Just love the look of the Gallardo spyder, and its been a big itch ive wanted to scratch for years.
Has anyone gone or known people that have gone this route?
Manual is better than egear, especially on earlier cars in my view. But the only problem with manual is that the revs climb so quickly that I used to hit the rev limiter quite often, and the cut out is brutal!
The Gaylord is obviously more of an occasion than a GT3, but the GT3 is a better, more interactive drivers' car in my view.
All depends on what you are after.
Early cars I drove were a
bit heavy, wooden ... kind of dated and numb compared to a 97 GT3. Even a F430 was a way better steer IMO.
Maybe a more recent manual 2 wheel drive LP550-2 would be a lot better ?

I know, the GT3 is hard to beat. I do fancy a spyder, but i have this feeling i will regret selling the GT3.

Yes love the EVO video on the LP550 manual

Mine was a spyder. Not sure there are too many manuals around, but the noise was great with the roof down.
Prices are quite stable.
Coming from GT3 I think you would want manual although quite rare if egear get the latest one you can afford.
On road not much difference, the engine pull and scream is very addictive. On track is less sharp than GT3 but still capable. I don't think you will be dissapointed only thing is depending on your build it's tighter inside, less storage, visabilty etc..
I must admit, I feel like the move to one, should be a bit of drama and that noise is great.
plus you get a 200k car for 1/2 price and not triple list price ;-)

Not as good to drive though.

I have to disagree on the track point. I went to a goldtrack event at silverstone and my 2 pals had 2 gallardos spyder. First gen e-gear, not super early cars. I went for a few passenger laps and was horribly disappointed. At the time had an Elise s2 190 and a 991 S. Elise was much more fun, 991 was just infinitely better in every way bar maybe noise.
E-gear was horrid. You could count 1-2-3 before change had happened. Car felt very very heavy and bloated, leaning heavily on the outside walls of tires which quickly overheated. Brakes (steel) held up to 4-5 laps sessions but just.
Overall I came back very disappointed and happy with my possessions. Maybe 570 or later 550lp would be an improvement but I would not recommend you the pre LP from what I have experienced.

For me the only car I would consider from the Gallardo range as a comparison to the GT3 would be a Superleggera and ideally a Super Trofeo or a Squadra Corse!
The super trofeo is one of the best looking cars I have ever seen and its quite handy around the track.
I don't fit in them though so, fantasy dream garage only.
any gallardo is going to feel less nimble than a gt3
the lp cars and 2007/8 sl are better
the spyders are even heavier
despite the impression you might get from the internet, 2wd and/or manual cars just did not sell in any numbers
servicing costs will be double, parts costs worse, fuel 50% greater, insurance can be surprisingly reasonable
depreciation is anyone's guess in this crazy market, but will be mileage sensitive

Iirc Carl you're about the same height/build as Andrew so think Gallardo is possibly doable ?
I will give it a go mate. I was told the fixed buckets seats were a little less forgiving.

if you're 6'1" ish, then headroom's going to be marginal, and legroom's going to be marginal in a spyder
if you're 200lb ish, then the bucket seats may or may not be comfortable across the shoulders, but they will give a little more head room and can be angled very slightly ( two bolts through two alternative holes )

They are. I agree with Andrew. I'm probably too tall for my spyder (570) and the buckets are uncomfortable after a long drive. But I don't tend to do long drives so it's ok. I found the seats in the 560 more comfortable. Definitely something you need to try.

have you tried changing to the alternative front mounting holes, so as to angle the seat back a little ?
Owned a Gallardo, nearly aswapped into a GT3
GT3 is better to drive, feeling wise. Gallardo is a bit too wide, heavy and not great brakes.
Everything else the Gallardo wins . Looks, sense of occasion etc. Noise/drama.
Mine was an 05 manual
The GT3 is a great track car. But it is not an exciting car. Too clinical.
The Gallardo is an occasion every time you drive it. The noise, the badge, the looks. People stop in their tracks and stare. The CGT and 918 are the only Porkers that can get close to a Lambo for a similar overall experience.
We ordered a 991 GT3 early 2013, then the engine debacle meant we would not have a car this summer. So jumping from the Porsche to the Gallerdo was a serious alternative for us, we looked at the various models and specifically the more recent cars (second generation - >2008), as these were the pinnacle of Gallerdo development. It also helped that two sets of friends had Gallerdo's.
We spent the day at Lamborghini Edinburgh (great guys) and test drove the Superleggera and Performante (Spyder), the Performante being the clear favourite for us. We also test drove the Aventador, and the Gallerdo is a much better car to drive and live with.
The downsides for the Gallerdo's with the e-gear, horrible, clunky and lack finesse on full throttle. The 2-wheel drive and manual cars were tempting but supposedly the maintenance costs are significantly higher over the 4-whee drive. Luggage space is serious lacking, so 2-3 week Euro tours (main reason for our sports car) would become more difficult. The four drive system is excellent, very planted and performs excellently in the wet. The cars with bucket seats (SL's) were quite harsh, they lacked the comfort of other carbon bucket seats like Porsche and McLaren.
When out with Lambo friends their cars get so much positive attention. The car really needs a Capristo or Tubi exhaust to match the wail of a Ferrari and bark, then growl at start-up.
In the end we ended up going for a TechArt Cayman (aside our friends SL)...
...but I have a hunger for a Gallerdo Technica Edition, but it would have to be a third car as its not practical enough (at least for us) to be a second car.

What he says!
I had a 2008 e gear coupe for 18 months and run a 7.2 GT3 CS just now. This hasn't stopped me lurking at pre LP spyders. They both have a lack of depreciation in common.
