Leading evidence: 'Install set' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Install set' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. If you have the Xenons, try replacing the bulbs and have the ballasts checked.

Are there LEDs to replace Halogens that work well?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Do any of you guys have LED headlights on your 996's, and did you get them for a reasonable price? I love my 996, and have spent far more money on it than I will ever see back, but despite that, I have reached a point where I can no longer look past the one glaring feature of it that I have not dealt with, which is how much I hate the factory headlights. I saw some older posts on other sites talking about LED headlights, such as the ones sold by "Xtreme MotorSports". The blacked out version of them is astonishingly nice to me, and it was discussed that members could get them in the $800 to $900 price point. Some recent research showed them to only be available on an Ebay Storefront at about $3000. This is more than I feel I can spend on this car anymore, but I would love to have them if it were a bit more economical...Any thoughts?

I certainly respect your opinion. With that said, are you saying that you like the look of the factory headlights compared to the link I've posted right below? (look at the left side compared to the right). Also, do you like the look of factory 996 headlights in general? If so, that's cool. I used to be fine with them, but have wanted an upgrade as of late while still keeping my car largely original. At $3000 however, I am also less of a fan. I can either find a way to appreciate the originals more, or move on to an early 991. I really want to see if there are folks out there though that have gotten a decent deal on these headlights. Thank you for your comment!

Couple of things:
- I actually don't mind the MK1 headlights, I think they suit the car's lines. That said I prefer them with clear turn signals
- What bothers me with the lights you are looking to upgrade to is the way the LEDs are integrated... That right angle "L" IMHO clashes with the curved design of the front end. I do like the contrast of light and dark in the assembly, I think these would look better with clear or slightly tinted incandescent turn signals (assuming that's what the LEDs are).
For what it's worth anyway, as my opinion is just that and I'm not bashing your choice at all.
Cheers
I agree with 91One, that LED light configuration totally misses the boat. I have been looking for LED solution as well to the point of the OP but the ones that are out there just seem to clash. I think to follow the spirit of Porsche and having a 2x2 configuration of LEDs as was with my GT3 would be a home run. Also, just a line of LEDs that follow the lower curve of the headlight assembly would be much better. Otherwise, I think Litronic is the way to go.
OP, do you currently have Halogens or Xenons?
It will not be cheap, but upgrading to the Xenons will make a world of difference. There are aftermarket options that are cheaper, but I don't know their quality or level of improvement.
If you have the Xenons, try replacing the bulbs and have the ballasts checked. There is a good chance you might still have the original bulbs and they lose intensity as they age. If the ballasts aren't functioning properly, that could cause problems and potentially damage the bulbs.
As far as the LED option you linked to, not for me. They look way too cheap knockoff to me and don't keep with the overall style of the car at all.
@808Bill My mod will be for the 996 MK2 headlights. Looking at pictures of the MK1 I don't think an exact drop-in will be feasible, but it looks like there's a similar panel I may be able to replace if there's enough interest...
@Ryan I'm not going to say anything on looks - you do you and all - but the main purpose of headlights is to be able to see the road in the dark. 4300k allows us to pick out the most detail, even if 6000k+ might appear to be brighter. Color filters are a universally terrible idea for automotive lighting, and with LEDs they're even worse - because white LEDs are blue with yellow fluorescence, a blue filter might block 50%+ of the light.
@OP It's not trivial to make a fairly complicated and precise assembly like a headlight module, and they benefit tremendously from economies of scale. I haven't seen any LED headlights (or DRLs) that I like for the 996, which is why I'm designing my own drop-in unit, but even then I'm only replacing one part per module - and it's costing me a couple hundred bucks to get everything for my prototype, not including time.
I'm with 91One that the L form really detracts from the look. If you're looking for a relatively minor change at a more reasonable price point, I'd consider heading to
Superbrightleds.com
and replacing your turn signal and parking light bulbs, and baking/prying/painting the headlight interior yourself.
Here's
what someone did with the MK2s.
The colored filters are glass tubes that slide over the bulb and are totally optional. The lights are as bright or brighter than the factory xenons. I really can't say enough about how great they are. All four of my cars now have them. I spent years messing with aftermarket HID kits. Now the struggle is over.
I really can't say enough about how good they are. I've put them in my Lexus GX470, VW Beetle, Audi TT and 911. All of my vehicles have projector lenses so I was lucky. The are bright, reliable and easy to put in.
Here is a link to the ones I bought for the GX470 (I think).

Best $50 I ever spent...
Thanks for the tip and the link for the headlights. I just installed a set on my 2015 GMC Sierra. It has projector headlights, but halogen bulbs. I haven't driven it at night yet, but it looks like it will be a significant improvement!
I am just now seeing this post almost two years later. The links to the led lights on amazon posted by Ryan, can someone give the name of the lights, please? The link is long broken and no ifo is available anymore. Thank you.
I think that the leds only work (and look) fine if you have projectors headlights. For instance, the MKII have all of them projectors, even when they dont mount xenon.
On those, the LED bulbs that are now available (no the cheapest chinese ones, but there are a lot of good quality ones available) look and perform well. I have them installed in a 2017 Ford Edge and I am very happy.
