Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Hi guys, I am about to purchase for a 2006 Porsche Boxster 2.7. I assumed that the weren't any IMS issues with the Boxster 987 as it was using the M97 engine . However when I checked the registration card, it shows that the M96 engine is used. I have been going through a few threads, and I can't seem to find a conclusive answer (some said that the 2006 model has an improved IMS , but most were referring to the Boxster S 3.2).

POST 2Original post

Both the M96 and M97 use an IMS . However small, I would not say there have been no IMS issues with both engine platforms. PCA has done an excellent video on IMS and explains the potential issues. The video should help with your investigation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i14LKvAW-So&t=318s

POST 3Original post

I'm sharing this from memory and I'm old. I recall old/previous posts that indicated all 2006 to 2008 Caymans have the M97 engines. However, I also recall that there may have been some early made 2006 Boxsters that did in fact have M96 engines as Porsche used up inventory. I don't think it was a lot but as I recall, it is possible to find an M96 in those cars. I would suggest you start some searching on this site because I'm pretty sure it's where I read that. As you probably already know, the IMS in the M97s was supposed to be more robust and less inclined to fail and history since then seems to confirm that is true. The statistics I also recall are that the M96s had an average IMS fail rate of 10% and the M97s had an average fail rate of 1%. And of course, the IMS went away with the 2009s. P.S. the fail rate on the 2.7 is really very, very small. The majority of fails are on the M96 3.2.

POST 4Original post

I'm in Budman's predicament - old and lapsing memory, but I think the 2006 could have an M96 engine but with the Gen III IMS . The last of the Gen II IMS were used in 2005 Boxsters. The Gen III IMS has the failure rate of 1%.

POST 5Original post

PCA highlight videos presented a discussion of IMS ... by Jake Raby... it goes over the particular IMS / IMS bearings used when and where. You may find it helpful. https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=5&v=i14LKvAW-So

POST 6Original post

For me the constant barrage of IMS fear mongering from the manufacturers of IMS solutions ruined the fun of having a Porsche . I sold my '08 Boxster . I was afraid to take it anywhere far away for fear the engine would fail and I'd be stuck. It seemed like every other page in the PCA mags was ads for this.
