Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

There is a competition version available but I believe it is quite a bit more $$'s and not really neccessary for road use only.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, Im in Australia, and I've bought a 2006 Cayman S that smokes a bit on cold start. It's blue smoke and only does it if I start the car and let it sit. If i drive immediately after start for around 2 minutes and the car heats up, it won't smoke but if i let the car sit idling from startup, it continues to smoke. Anyone have an idea if this is normal or can diagnose this? Cheers, Eddie

POST 2Original post

My 2007 did pretty much the same at about 45,000 miles. Most of those 987's do it. But, in my case, the blue smoke became a bit "too much" at cold start and idle. I changed the AOS (Air-oil-separator) and the blue smoke stopped. And while the AOS change at a dealer isn't "cheap", its better than having to go into the motor, valves/guides, whatever. If it really gets to you, try the AOS . . D

POST 3Original post

Thanks for the info mate. In my case, like yours it is a lot of blue smoke at cold start and idle. It doesn't do it if i drive off for a few minutes and then idle at the lights once the temp gauge is off bottom. It just the initial idle where the car sits. I'll get the dealer to change the AOS at the next service.

POST 4Original post

One further question, did you replace it with the standard AOS or an upgraded version?

POST 5Original post

There is a competition version available but I believe it is quite a bit more $$'s and not really neccessary for road use only.

POST 6Original post

The competition version is $1300 vs $90 for the OEM. I thought about doing the competition version since I track my CSS, but did the math and decided I could do quite a few OEMs before making it pay. I keep a spare on hand. You do not want to let a leaking AOS go. If the tear in the diaphragm gets worse, you can flood cylinders with oil and cause hydrolock. It is normal for Porsches to smoke a bit at start up, esp if it's sat for several days or sits at an angle. But with the age of your Cayman , it's probably due for an AOS . The OEM design is not robust. A bit higher oil consumption is also a sign of a failing AOS .

POST 7Original post

Hey did you ever get this resolved? Mine is exactly the same. Replaced aos too and went for a drive then next morning smoking just as before at idle. Will literally smoke until I don't idle it and go drive it.

POST 8Original post

I know this is an old post, but a bit of blue smoke on startup is normal for Porsches. Because the cylinders sit flat, oil can accumulate on the cylinders, and small amounts can seep under the piston rings into the combustion chamber and it burns on startup. Because Porsche designed their engines for the tightest tolerance at high temperatures, the gaps are larger cold, and more oil will seep under the rings cold. Consequently, if you start the engine and park it cold, you will get a lot of blue smoke on startup. If you park your car hot while the gaps are small, you will get less blue smoke on startup.

POST 9Original post

I replaced AOS I think that helped a bit but it still smokes for a good while. It actually starts smoking more when the car idles down and is warming up. Probably 10-15 minutes before no smoke. Also own and have owned Subaru but why don't they do it?
