Since ive owned my 07
cayman s
(only about a month) ive noticed a slight interference between the edge of the rear hatch and the spoiler on the passenger side. I've attached a few pictures. Both parts are seeing a slight degradation of the powder coat. I've not heard of this happening, and I dont know what might have caused it (no known accidents on the carfax). Any idea if it is the spoiler or the hatch that is at fault here?
Might this be applicable to your situation?

Hmm, maybe. Do you know how to get to the spoiler adjustment on a 987
cayman
though? The instructions there are not accurate.
the spoiler on my
981
base
boxster
sits too close to the fascia, and this has spalled the paint. i believe the fascia has to be removed to adjust; i am fairly sure that there is an adjustment mechanism in the mounting brackets, just like for doors and lids.
For the 987 you will need to raise your spoiler. Put a rag around the holes where the struts are then remove the 7 screws along the front of the spoiler. It will come right off. The underside mount will have a nut inside the well, loosen this and you will be able to move it as required. You can also adjust the height if needed when that same nut is loose using an allen key. It will be obvious once the spoiler is off. I believe the nut is a 13mm.
I am not sure on the
981
but would look at the same concept.
Ok thanks for the info. I think I'll need to increase the height of the spoiler on the side where there is interference. Any idea what the gap between the bottom of the spoiler and the body should be when it's retracted? It looks like it should be maybe 6mm or so?
From the perspective of bodywork I would align the top of the spoiler to the hatch so the flow is smooth assuming the hatch is aligned correct to the car. This is the key visual point. If there is a clearance issue with the underside you might want to look at everything a little closer to see if something else is not correct. I glanced at a customers stock spoiler yesterday who was picking up one of our spoilers and it had generous space under and on the ends. If needed you could have the spoiler slightly higher then the hatch.
I just went out and measured the gap of the retracted spoiler from the body. One side was 11mm the other was 13mm (where I'm seeing the interference). So definitely a difference. Upon quick inspection, the hatch seems to be aligned fine, and if it wasn't wouldn't i have issues latching it closed or is there enough play in that mechanism to hide slight misalignment?
Wrt the spoiler adjustment, I'm not sure now whether I need to increase the gap or decrease it. I'll have to play with it tonight when I get home. Not sure why it would have gotten out of adjustment...
You could split the difference. 2mm is probably on the larger side of tolerance but I am not sure I would be overly concerned. Post what you you find this evening.
So, I found the problem. One of the previous owners clearly had an incident with the spoiler as it had a crack on the lower component:
Then I remove the top part and see this:
Idk what he did but clearly this is the cause, likely because the lower mount component was removed and when it was reinstalled, he did not align it properly. So once I exposed the 13mm nut and loosened the right side where the interference was, it gave me some play because the thru hole is oversized to the mount strut hole. Took me two seconds to fix and then mounted the top piece back on. Problem solved.
I will, however, probably replace both components in the future. What a jamoke this guy was with this fix...
Thanks for the help!
No problems for the info and P-9 is great to find all the details about our cars from other users experience.
Doesn’t look to nice in there!
Thanks for reporting back. The lower piece is # 987 504 623 00 (I would confirm before ordering) and I think runs between 105 and 110 from
Suncoast
and is likely in stock.
You could always add our Spoiler at the time of replacement if you like
