Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Brothers: I am currently thinking of performing a wheel upgrade from my 18" Classic Stock Wheels to 19" SSR GT Wheels with Kuhmo Rubber. My question is simply this, are there any negatives with going to 19" ? Are there any benefits ?

POST 2Original post

More unsprung weight, prone to damage, increased stress on the chassis......19" are not a good idea IMO. Why do you think the racers use 18"? Leave the 19s for the posers. Just my .02, you asked. But they sure do look good on the other hand.

POST 3Original post

19" - stiffer ride, limited tire size selection, more expensive tires, tires not as widely available.

POST 4Original post

Dj 996 is right about that it may weigh more and more prone to damage. It depends where you drive the car. If there are lots of bumps and pot holes then the rims can get damaged a little easier than 18", but not much 18s are pretty prone to damage too. You will not gain any handling. If you do it it will be for the looks. If you like the looks them go for it. If you think it will help handling than don't do it. I don't see how can it stress the chassis more. I mean the SSR are relatively light I don't think they can weigh 3-4 more than your current set up so I would not worry too much. If it was me I'm stuck in the same boat. I like the looks, but I DE the car and like 18" cause there are R compound tires.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

The Damaging of the Rims I knew might be a problem - 18" It Is. Thanks Guys...

POST 6Original post

Remember I said a little easier, I have seen pletty of 18" bent too. For the record I have seen 17's also. Just depend how and where you drive.

POST 7Original post

Posted on the 993 forum: 19" rims do look nice though

POST 8Original post

ssr's even the 19's are half the weight of porsches lightest wheel, so i doubt your adding any unsprung weight, but then tire's and bending the rims would be a problem with light weight rims of that size

POST 11Original post

Aren't the 18" 5 spoke carrera wheels approx 21lbs? I'd buy 11lb wheels in a hearbeat

POST 12Original post

May Issue of Excellence magazine, page 58, explored this debate closely. ".....We will only do it in 18-inch because the suspension design of the 996 is such that - if you use 19-inch wheels - the wider tires and stiffer sidewalls create more geometry problems than they solve on bumpy roads. I agree they look better, but we are all about performance and driving qualities here, not posing!"....

POST 13Original post

exactly that half the weight deal is bull I hate when people make dumb comments that are so outragous that inthemselves give notice of stupidity

POST 14Original post

spr get bent, the ssr's are 15lbs, and from what i read the porsche lightweights are 28 so get a life you insulting *****

POST 15Original post

I don't know which SSR are you quoting and what size, I know for sure the SSR GT3 19" weighs more than 20 lbs. I don't even think BBS magnesium wheels in 18 " are 15 lbs. Of corse I may be a *****

POST 16Original post

well the 18" SSR competition wheels i have are only 14lbs each, and im deffinatly a *****, but atleast i didn't have to try and insult anyone because i thought the lightweight porsche wheels where heavier than the ssr's

POST 17Original post

i found the ssr site. says the type-c are 10.19 kg for a 19x10.5 wheel. that's 22.41 lbs. the 18s are about 2 lbs lighter.
