Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Hi looking for some guidance. The other day after a drive noticed a high pitch squealing sound coming from the engine. Removed the carpet and metal cover. This sound starts after about 1 minute of idleing and goes away after about 5-10 seconds once the engine is shut down. The noise can also be stopped by removing the small vacuum hose near the throttle body inlet. Thoughts are it may be the AOS creating too much vacuum leading to possible air being drawn in through a connection somewhere. It doesn’t do it until the engine is hot. Has anyone had similar experience or thoughts. Car is a 987.2 2.9 cayman ie 9a1 engine

POST 2Original post

My 2010 2.9L made the exact sound. Does it only do this at idle and go away with even the slightest touch of throttle? If so, could be the water pump. Removing the vacuum hose could just slightly increase the idle RPM.

POST 4Original post

Well I see that people want to point to the water pump and I would have also based purely on the description of the sound. However, you say that the sound "goes away after about 5-10 seconds once the engine is shut down". So if I'm understanding this correctly the sound persists for several seconds AFTER the engine shuts down. Therefor it can not be the water pump and most likely is a vacuum leak. The cause may indeed be the AOS, this I can not tell. But I'll bet a cup of coffee it is vacuum related. Good Luck!

POST 5Original post

Engine fan maybe? Mine went bad and it would whine as well. Not throttle dependent though.
