Reported cause

It was the starter motor spigot not returning quickly enough after start-up and therefore staying engaged with the crown wheel gear teeth on the fly wheel and spinning the starter motor up to engine speed, hence the noise.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

3 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1Original post

Hi all, just yesterday my 987.2 Cayman started to make a very loud groaning noise from a cold start. This is coming from the engine bay.Took about 5 minutes for it to fully disappear. I don't know if this is the water pump because I don't see a leak and also I haven't loss any coolant. Thanks. I've got a video but I don't know how to post it.

POST 2Original post

My 987.1 Cayman was making a brief but loud moaning sound on start-up. It was the starter motor spigot not returning quickly enough after start-up and therefore staying engaged with the crown wheel gear teeth on the fly wheel and spinning the starter motor up to engine speed, hence the noise. The starter motor is under the intake manifold and not easily accessible. I just had a new starter motor which solved my problem. I'm not saying this is the problem with your car too, but it would be worth having checked out. I've also had noise from the water pump which was a high pitch whine, the bearing was starting to fail. A new water pump sorted that.

POST 3Original post

Thanks for your input. I changed the water pump on my own but the groan persisted. Gave up and took it to a Porsche specialist and they thought that a power steering fluid leak through a hose is causing the power steering pump to be starved of fluid and as such the groan. Funny thing is that once the car is up to temp the sound disappears.
