I think there are a couple of Rennlist guys running 500+ bhp turbos through the stock trans.

Take one cheap imported 914, add tuned SBC motor using kit from above place = outrageous track day car for sensible money?

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Surely selling the 944 and buying a 928 would make more sense?
I can see the point of super/turbocharging an existing 944 engine but I would have thought a V8 would just make it front heavy and destroy the whole point of the car.
Isn't the 928 quite a bit heavier? The engine can't weigh that much more - carrying a passenger might have a similar effect. The Rover engine is quite light compared to most V8s and is more tuneable than the 944 unit and probably easier/cheaper to maintain. The noise would suit the car nicely I think
I think people are working on the idea that if the engine bay is long enough for a four pot, and wide enough for a flat six, then a V8 would fit in.
The 944 is smaller and lighter than the 928, so the performance should be good. Also, one of the major complaints of the 944 by many was the rather dull four pot engine note - a V8 would be an obvious solution.
If the V8 was all aluminium, than the weight increase over the front wheels shouldn't be horrific. The TVR AJP8 engine would be perfect, for example...
I just meant that the 944 was never intended to be a V8 drag car, but a good handling coupe and it just seems a bit pointless to me attempting to turn one into the other. Buy a turbo, chip it to 330 bhp for about a grand and you have a very fast car as it was designed to be. Fair points about the exhaust note and TVR engine though.
From what I have read the alloy Chevy SB is lighter than the Rover V8, and more power is available. I think there is at least one person on Rennlist with one of these conversions.

Yup, all the way up to 600+bhp. Enough to scare the Gemballa 911s. I wonder if the transaxle could cope?
As you say, a 330+bhp 944 Turbo is the sensible way to go, but my Turbo suffered from the usual trubo ailments... the occasional mystery misfire, oil leaks, head gasket worries etc. so a less stressed V8 could be an interesting proposition.
I think there are a couple of Rennlist guys running 500+ bhp turbos through the stock trans. Not sure how long for though. The Powerhaus 968 turbo conversion looks nice, but I think a 968 motor with a supercharger would be a nice drivable stealth option, especially in a lighweight CS.
I think Domster has a long way to go before he needs to choose an engine for the Ultima. It looks like the Ultima engine choice increases in power by about 50bhp a quarter. By the time Dom gets to put the engine in the chevy will be supercharged, turbocharged and nitrox

A 914 with a SB Chevy V8!
I want one. Saw a white car along those lines at the Volksworld show last year. IIRC it had twin turbo's. I thought it must have been built from scratch at huge cost but looking at this site maybe it wouldn't be so difficult:
Take one cheap imported 914, add tuned SBC motor using kit from above place = outrageous track day car for sensible money?
Could this be a low-cost alternative to an Ultima for Porsche loving speed nuts?

Iguana's last post read
(Re engine bay being able to accommodate a flat six)
Nope all the measurements have been done by a workmate of mine- (very Porsche experienced) and he is certain it will fit. Why you would do it with the power a 944Turbo engine can produce or the beautifly balanced power of a 240bhp 968 engine available I have no idea tho....
Oh also I'm now working with a fella who is shoveing a 4.2ltr rover V8 into his 944 at the moment completely mad I feel but still at least it will be different
