I have been looking at the forums, mostly in the 981 section and have read the posts about the relative merits of the 981 vs the 991. Since I currently drive a 997, I have been partial to the 991 but have been looking at the 981CS as a change of pace and mostly because of price point. Of course, on the 981 forum and in ******** and other 981 forums, we 911 owners are simply status seeking posers who know nothing about the relative merits of the cars and the advantage of the mid engine platform. So, what I would like to discuss is the relative merits of a used 991S vs the new 981CS. In building the CS on the Configurator, to equip the car the way I want it, I always end up around $85K. That would be a PDK car with Bose, 14 way heated and ventilated seats, PASM, Sport Exhaust and Sport chrono and maybe PTV and a few minor options - no fancy leather or any other of the larger appearance options. I have also searched the Porsche site for CPO 991S cars and find that some very nice low mileage examples can be found for not much more than the $85K, ranging in price from about $90K to $100k with all of the same options that I would choose for the 981S. The difference in price is not that significant but the question is whether it is worth it. So, I'm wondering what most people think about buying used as opposed to new. BTW, I still do believe that the 911 is an iconic purchase and that the 981 series is relatively new. I also do believe that the 911 holds a bit more prestige in the car world but am not denigrating the performance of the 981. So, what do you think?
I went through the same process, and went with a slightly used 991S. At the end of the day, one of the big things was I was always wanting more acceleration in the cayman I had, and the 981S was quicker, but still didn't have the pull I wanted. I also find the ride to be a bit better for DD, and of course it's much faster on a track. Good luck either way.
I'm going through the same process.
Coming from a torque monster V10 in my Audi, I don't think anything less than the 3.8 will be satisfying.
Sounds like you picked a great 991. Good luck.
I had an RS4 prior to the 911 but, other than the engine sound, never missed it.
I was in a BMW 550xi. It just wasn't as fun to drive as the Cayman, so I switched to the 911. They rate the BMW at 400hp/450tq but it dynos more like 470hp and 500tq, and wow was it fast and smooth. Test driving the new 981 was fun, but it felt like a toy compared to the 911. (That's not to say I didn't enjoy it. I loved the 981. Just for me, I wanted more speed, and same with a lot of people in them. )
Among other benefits, buying a used CPO typically adds both mileage and time to the original warranty terms. But the big advantage is that someone else takes the big first year's depreciation hit. In my case in late 2010 I found a late (Sept. '09 in-service date) '09 Carrera S with less than 8000 miles for 2/3'rd.s the original invoice price. I used the PCNA national pre-owned dealer inventory tab search button, and found a car configured EXACTLY (exterior and interior colors, and all options) as I would do it as if I was sitting at my dealer's sales desk. It took me a Sunday afternoon at my computer looking at the national inventory offerings, and Monday morning I made my deal. I've never looked back.
