Was in my OPC today looking at the current “shortages” list. Bloody hell you don’t want a GT4 allocation at the moment. As of now you cannot order a new GT4 with the following: PTS, PCCB, Buckets, PDLS+, or some of the interior options. So basically it’s a poverty spec, resale death car or nothing sir.
Fancy waiting a few years for an allocation and then being told that.
Will no doubt help to prop up resale on nearly new well specified cars.
Look on the bright side though Bose is back on
Mines in build at the moment. Tracker is showing I have a VIN now. So fingers crossed all my options are on it. Only thing I had to give up was the PDLS+, but it was replaced with the new LED PDLS.
I’m really unsure of these fancy lights on anything other than motorways. They’re pretty useless on the dark b roads around me and reflective road signs set them off on unlit roads.

Only thing you’re losing is the dynamic dipping/auto full beam… because the camera is not longer fitted. not much loss as it’s far too slow reacting anyway, certainly
for me

Lack of buckets is a big issue for a GT car, not good for Porsche!
I think any supply has been earmarked for GT4RSs, where they're not marked as restricted supply.

My 4RS locked a couple of days ago so I'm pretty up to date on spec. PTS, PCCBs and LED+ are unavailable for the foreseeable future, non of them I'm really fussed about apart from PCCBs. The latter can be replaced by Surface Transforms which I fully intend doing so no real biggie.
BOSE would have caused 4-6 wk delay so left it off rather than tempt fate. LWBs are standard on the 4RS.
I would not order a new GT4 right now as you can buy a fully loaded one on the used OPC network for less than new price, which is what I did.

This.
I don’t think Porsche are that bothered either. Plenty on the used market and within the dealer network… so everyone that wants a car can get on at nearly new/lightly used.

Manual lights. Surely people will lay a premium for them in the future… lol.
In fairness never tried the Porsche matrix system, but our Defender system works pretty well on the lanes round us. But I’m definitely not bothered about it not being available on this car. At least it still has the cornering function, which does work well.

You get the same amount of OPC brownie points whether you buy an used Porsche or a new one. Don't quite get all this whinging on lomg lead times and spec shortages when you can buy pretty much exactly your perfect spec right now from an OPC.

Yep, the cornering function is fine… but the response of the auto full beam/dipping is borderline dangerous… or you have to slow down quite alot.

Some people like a shiny, new self-specced car when spending £90k+.
I know I do...
Everyone forgets… As the access to the top end products becomes ‘democratised’ … everyone feels entitled to a certain experience… When it wasn’t not always that way. It was a boom… but now we return to the historical norm…. For good or for bad.
Look around the world and all markets… you are seeing exactly this.

Always make at least one less than demand!
Porsche are masters at managing their pricing hierarchy and marketplace.
Market segmentation and astute volume sensing .... I'll guess that the Porsche Car Configurator gives them a lot of information
The biggest problem in manufacturing is anticipating this in conjunction with R+D product cycles, order cycles and component lead times. This became a nightmare after covid ... some component leads were always as long as 26 weeks ... which after Covid became 52 and even then you might have to competitively bid for your stock, irrespective of the price agreed.
Again we see the effects of this ... and China now has a Covid problem affecting the whole country and with the Lunar New Year coming ... when a significant proportion of the population will be travelling both inside and outside of China.
WHO can't trust the info coming out (no surprise there) ... what will be the effect of this down stream for manufacturers depending on components that they may not now receive for an undetermined time ... ?
I guess at least this is a known unknown, but what comes next ? Unknown unknowns ...
Resilience to this level is a rare thing ...
Help me out here. I am at a bit of a loss with the various lighting options on the current mid engined platform offerings. I could do with a history lesson.
My Cayman R has great lights that look round corners, Bi-Xenon Dynamic lights.
My Spyder has LED main headlights including PDLS+, so looks round corners and an almost useless auto dim function.
My GT4 has standard Bi-Xenon lights that don’t look round corners. But not bad lights TBF
My GT4 RS order has LED headlamps including PDLS. ( but no +)
Now the Porsche list of unavailable options shows that the PDLS+ option is currently not available. Makes no reference to PDLS without a plus.
So I am a bit confused. What is the difference between The plus and non plus option on the LED lights?

The LED PDLS+ offer auto dim compared to LED PDLS. Other than this they are pretty much identical. My GT4 has the + function which I find useful albeit not infallible.

Ah right so the GT4 RS doesn’t have the + as an option. Which makes sense as you wouldn’t want all that extra weight of the camera gubbins right at the top of the windscreen.
Must be the camera stuff that’s not available at the moment
Added benefit for lightness is that you don’t get headlight washers poking out the front PU.
I think this is new legislation since MY22?

If anyone’s particularly keen on getting a GT4 sooner rather than later, I’ll be giving mine back to the dealer and can do that whenever. I’m sure they’d be happy to turn it around quickly, I’d expect it would be sought after
Pretty much all options ticked. Think cost new was 106k. Then full PPF and MR kit

I’m not sure this is exactly the case.
I’ve had a PTS GT4 on order since June, according to my OPC it will be ready for collection
in March.
In the meantime I’ve been checking the secondhand market regularly because if I could buy a used
example for below list that is the correct spec I’d simply buy it and cancel my order- however in the 7 months I’ve been waiting I’ve not seen one car that ticks all the boxes for me and virtually no PTS cars with PDK seem to come up for sale.
There are lots of cars available only if you want a standard colour at nearly new price.

Seems too cheap
It's coming up to 3 years old, manual, standard headlights (even though the advert says it's LED+), a lot of inside frippery, CS and Ceramics which makes it a very niche sell.
...it's been for sale since last summer. IMO it's overpriced for what it is.
Edited by kmpowell on Sunday 8th January 09:18
I don't think it's a niche sell, it's a nice spec on the posher side of things. I think it's asking an OPC price at a non-OPC dealer, that's the issue.
I wonder if Gentian is hurting it too. Metallic blues on GT cars do seem to hang around a bit.

Gentian is a beautiful deep blue however doesn't seem to be very sought after on GT Porsches for whatever reasons. Ideal for other Porsches especially non GT Porsches. Porsche 718GT4 in this colour don't seem to sell quickly unless priced lower.

I have a real dislike for "posh" GT cars, maybe I'm not alone....
I agree OP Porsche owners seem to be a fickle bunch. We went from Spec is everything to ah spec doesn't mean anything and we have people ordering cars which to be quite frank are missing key important things. Headlights from back in the 80s or from a base spec kia picanto.
If people didn't order these cars with these options missing its safe to assume Porsche would make it happen somehow to get them back.

In the case of RS it’s 408mm (Steel) plays 410mm (PCCB) for the Front and 380 (steel) vs 390 (PCCB) on the rear.
Usually for conversion… ST supply a spacer to move out the calliper on the front.
Launch of ST for RS is imminent apparently so details will be out soon.

Surface Transform made a carbon brake kit for both the steel and PCCB braked cars ... the GT4's were massively overbraked from the start ... GT3 brakes on a lighter less powerful car.
Why not ask Surface Transform if you need to be certain ... this maybe making a virtue of necessity ... £6k + ? towards the much better discs and earlier delivery ?

AFAIK Surface Transforms are fully compatible with the Red Steel OEM Calipers as they are the same as the Yellows apart from a few spacers. The GT4 RS Steels are larger than the Steels on the GT4 especially on the front, 408mm vs 380mm IIRC.
Unfortunately I have had no reason to check
But from new I think I would now choose steels and replace with ST's from new .... putting the steels and pads away ....
Thanks for the comments on disc sizing.
I too had to lock down my spec and wanted PCCB but took the compromise and went with steels with black calipers. I have had Surface Transforms before and they are fantastic for track use. If ST make the discs for the 4RS then that sounds like the way to go.

I also ordered steels rather than PCCB so it was of no consequence to me. I am quite happy to start on the standard discs with upgraded pads and take it from there. No rush to buy anything else just yet. On paper a steel braked 4RS looks to have plenty of stopping power.

It seems that I'm not alone in choosing Steels with Black Calipers on the 4RS.. Great minds think alike
Nice that Porsche gives options.
Tbh things I’m struggling most with is exterior colour.
I’m not actually a fan of the WP… as I’ve said before, I only want the race-tex dash, as it reminds me of McLaren LT and is just cool.
I’m not fussed about the visible carbon bonnet, and the side intake ears I could take or leave. I think the standard open items are cooler and that’s what’s on the race car, RS Clubsport.
I haven’t seen comparison that shows the internal sound difference between WP carbon intake parts and non WP plastic…. there is no performance difference.. maybe WP has a little more drag with the ears. Lol.
There are aftermarket WP style tips available, if I want that look… as that is cool.
I’d spec WP if I ‘had’ to, but that would mess up colour choice and PTS is not available.
So at the moment my leading exterior options are:
- Gentian Blue or Solid Black
- Clubsport (obviously)
- Non-WP,
- LED PDLS
- Steels with Black Callipers
- Silver Standard Forged wheels
If I had to take WP, GT Silver would be top choice.

Mclaren's alcantara is closer to black and looks moody and classy for it. The Porsche racetex is closer to a light grey and in my opinion it washes the cabin out to be John Major like.

Your taking a far too sensible approach to this nice problem to have.
I only chose WP because I also wanted the Racetex dash but I also love the look of the CF Air intakes behind the windows.
I'd have gone GT Silver but I just couldn't bring myself to pay £2.3k to paint half a car when its only £800 for a whole 718GT4.
Mine will be Flat Black which blends in nicely with CF and is a free colour
Gentian is beautiful but again £2.3k on the 4RS.
Mags save 10kg unsprung which I justify by saving on no PCCBs.
The WP itself is purely aesthetic on the RS however it allows one to spec Mags and Titanium cage.
Trouble is the WP with the other two only weight saving options really adds to the cost.

Yeah. I ruled out the Mag wheels.. because in my mind it cost 20k to get them…. As you need WP and then that opens option for the wheels, but then they aren’t unique (ie it’s same WP wheels as previous WP cars, 991 RS and 918).
I do like the standard 4RS wheels and then would rather potentially put that money toward MR package with whatever wheels they’ll need to support the aero discs.
If they did a full black pack like the late mules (so all the WP parts in just black and not visible carbon) that would suit my taste, and make just just going with black easier, as that’d be the same as my current car.
It is academic at present, but who knows.
I got an allocation towards the end of December but my build wouldn't lock in due to having PCCB's and PTS. Had to get rid of both options but to be honest, I was more bothered about PTS than the brakes. I really wanted to get a unique colour.
Where I live I need to drive on a gravely road and in the past have had stones get stuck in rotors from being flicked up, creating a horrendous screech. Have read PCCB's are very fragile so would rather not take that risk.
Strange that the configurator is still showing PCCB's though.
PDLS+ was no longer an option so went for LED PDLS. Again, not overly bothered by this.
Skipped bucket seats too for 18-way sports seats as getting in and out of bucket seats for me was a nightmare.
ETA for the car is mid March.
When was your spec lock in date?

Lock-in date was the 3rd of Jan. I put my name and deposit down for a GT4 in Jan 2022. I was quite fortunate as my dealer told me someone decided to give their allocation up which was then offered to me.
Mid march sounds quite late for delivery but I've heard there has been delays with getting cars shipped over to the UK.

Surface Transform supply a complete brake kit, so you get caliper spacers to move the brake caliper outwards by 5mm to accommodate a larger disc (if the car was built on steels). They say the kit isn’t available until May or June though.
What about the performance friction brake disc and pad setup, anyone tried them..? I’ve used them on rallycars, and they’re exceptional, and really easy to bed in. A quarter of the price of a surface transform brake kit too….

Yep… I think that spacing may not be required for steel braked RS as there is already pretty much no clearance between calliper and wheel barrel on the front anyway. So it’s exactly the same as PCCB calliper… OEM rotor difference is only 2mm. 408 steel v 410 pccb, now with a very similar swept area and position.
Obviously was a different situation with 380mm steel rotor so spacer defo required to get the correct swept area and position.
PFC rotors are great performers. I had them on my 981 GT4… very durable.
Only things to watch out for:
- Supply chain and making sure you know when you’re gonna need a new set and order ahead.
- Also with the V3 friction spring clip setup, it can develop a bit of a rattle over time with use and heat cycles. The rotor is fully floating and only retained by the spring clip which can loose strength and then the rotor can move more freely on the hat. It’s never in danger of coming off but will be an annoyance in your head at low speed. If you’ve used them before, you may be familiar.
Not sure if they have a kit for 4RS yet as again, rotor bells might need to be different for 4RS offset.

Regarding the rattle on the V3 disc bell retention system, have you tried the road spec spring clip..? It has no float compared the race spec spring, which does have some axial float built into the design.

So when I had them it looked like PFC were moving between a 2 coil and, a 3 coil spring clip.
It was the 2 coil spring clip that seemed to develop the issue. Problem is that the clip is not interchangeable… as the rotor hat was specific for 2 coil or 3 coil. It was annoying as I had 3 corners with 3 coil and, 1 corner with 2 coil… which was the one that rattled. Just had to manage it by buying few spare spring clips and changing it out every so often.
I do believe it only 3 coil is supplied now, but worth checking, when you receive your order. It’s not an isolated event, I know a few 991 GT3 owners that have the PCCB replacement kit, and had the same issue, and now need to manage in a similar way.
Other option to look at now is Girodisc. They have an updated design for 992 GT3 PCCB replacement which I expect would be similar/compatible with 4RS. Curved Slots, with a black hat, looks almost like the PFC style, which is a good thing IMO.

I got the call today to offer a build Slot for April but you guessed it no PCCB or CS available. I have differed obviously. Hopefully they will sort themselves out for back end of the year. I was supposed to be a December delivery so obviously everyone is passing on the base spec cars.

I’ve seen those girodisc kits, and they look really good, very similar design to an Alcon disc and bell.
I’m still surprised a standard steel brake setup on a GT4/GT3 doesn’t have a removable bell so you can just replace the disc braking surface.

I’d have taken it, still one of the best Porsche sports cars currently for sale. If you’re concerned it’s underbraked, you could always swap out the steel brakes for a set of Surface transform, PFC or Girodisc brake kits.
As for parts shortages, this issue won’t sort itself out anytime soon

All the available choices is why Porsche is still top dog even if the alpine a110R I’m adding is more than 300kg lighter than the wp rs. The gt4 is a great all round car. I’d get one without any option except pdk and clubsport

I agree. The 380mm F/R are more than plenty for the GT4. Same goes for thr GT4 RS with its bigger 408mm front discs. Different matter if you don't like brake dust and feel the benefits of less unsprung weight.

Neither do I, any GT car on steel brakes is far from underbraked, hence my question to the poster saying “if you’re concerned it’s underbraked”….

Nah no interest in paying 80 to 100k for something that's not what I want. A lightly used one is under list now if I was that fussed there are plenty around. The main appeal was to be able to have a new one and know it's been run in correctly and treated right.
IIRC When the sold the 981 GT4s they ran short of buckets in the US and people could order their car receive with base seats and then get the upgrade when the seats came IIRC. I suppose Rennlist mob are pretty powerful?

Hi guys what’s not available? I’ve just been looking at configuration tool online and buckets are on there?
Anybody care to list what’s not available anymore ?
Thanks

From my own recent experience, the configurator still lists all options, but when you submit a spec to your dealer, they’ll advise what is and isn’t available. PCCBs seem not to be available across many cayman and 911s.
Bucket seats where fitted as standard (GT4RS and GT3RS) are still available, but the availability where they’re an option appears to be patchy, but this seems dependant on the build date.

You need to get your OPC to pull up the options availability spreadsheet on the dealer only network. This lists all models and all the options in a matrix format. There are a lot of options currently not available across the entire Porsche range. I guess it’s a constantly shifting picture and the only way to be sure is to go to the dealer. As I understand it from my OPC if you submit an order for an option that is not available then the order is rejected.

Thanks will check with them next week. Really want buckets or it’s a none starter if not available.
I know where you are coming from. I have buckets in the GT4 and 18ways in the Spyder. This in my opinion is perfect. The heated 18 ways suit the more laid back Spyder vibe and are bloody comfy. The buckets really do suit the GT4 and the trackday vibe.

Buckets and PCCBs have a circle with a cross in them next to the option on the configurator to indicate restricted supply.
Well spotted, I need glasses…!
I've got a GT4 build slot for May 2023, not going to proceed with bucket seats - waiting on an update from my dealer. Has anyone got a similar build slot for a similar time as it's proving hard to get any clarity from the dealer.
yes I have a May build slot also - can't get ceramics - Buckets and of course clubsport pack - so have to do comfort seats . all over options seem ok - PDLS Bose etc..
