PS - I ran against a 2003 Z06 with minor mods (He claimed about 425 HP in his car).

These 2 guys I met ran their TT's again the Z06 on the Ocean Pky from about 20MPH and a dead stop and the Z06 beat them BOTH!

Then I could really see for myself how it compares to the GT3, which I suspect would be no comparison and I would hate it.

With regards to the performance comparison between GT3 and TT (I know nothing about Corvettes), I can tell you that a programme called Top Gear in the UK have been running a bunch of cars on their test-track over the last year (the last series and the new series now currently showing).
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just for the record and I know this has been discussed over and over, but I had 2 separate 996TT owners tell me that the Z06 is FASTER in straight line acceleration. These guys are no expert drivers, but is this true or not? Of course the Z06 owners will say yes, and many 996TT owners will say no, but what is the real deal.
And I know most of you only care about the track and results there, but please satisfy my curiosity. It's more annoying than anything since the car is $75K less than the TT.
there are plenty of cheap 1980s camaros around long island that will lay the smack down on a 996TT and a z06 in a straight line, not worth being annoyed about, just enjoy knowing you have the better car at the end of the day
There you go assuming that the price of a car is an indication of its performance potential. That's one that will bite you in the *** more often than not.
How about the answer Steve - the 996TT is quite obviously a much more refined and better machine and is probably faster in the track. I know straight line acceleration is not the most important criteria either, I just wanted to know what the real truth is. I have heard the Z06's are very, very fast.. Figured someone here would have the performance data and not just opinions all the time.
There you go assuming that's what I was saying - If I thought the price meant more performance, then why did I buy a GT3 over a 996TT?
Someone PLEASE post the answer to the question.. Thanks!

I have some nice videos of a 996TT laying the smack down on a Z06. They raced twice from a dead stop and every time the 996 was at least 2 car lengths ahead in the end.
Thanks for the notes Dan.. Any real world comparison? These 2 guys I met ran their TT's again the Z06 on the Ocean Pky from about 20MPH and a dead stop and the Z06 beat them BOTH! All cars involved were stock... I know ANYONE can drive fast in a straight line on an open road, which is what puzzled me even more. I have seen those #'s, but they do not always tell the real story.
There is no question. In a straight line, from a dead stop, stock car vs stock car, same or equivalent drivers, the Z06 will beat a 996 TT by a hair. Which car to buy for day to day and occasional track? The 996TT by a mile.
Rockitman -
It certainly looks that way... But those numbers are simply what they are - numbers. We both know that in the real world, that means crap. Test a Z06 or TT or GT3 on different days (climate, etc), and get different results. We need to run them all together at the same time in order to get the real facts.
Thanks to PALTING for answering the question, then adding his opinion. That is a hard task for many on this board. They like to RIP you for asking a question that they may deem unimportant or not in their interest.
So the Z06 beats a 996TT (both stock) in straight line acceleration. My guess is that is probably due to gearing. Notice the Z06 top speed of 170 vs 190 of the TT. I guess with all this being said, my GT3 should be a hair quicker than the Z06.. Still a vette - no thanks.
This has been discussed a million times before, but I still find the topic interesting. Being that I own a 996TT, I would love to hear that the Turbo wins hands down.
Nonetheless, the reality is that you can buy a new Z06, put $4,000 into the engine & performance, put $5000 into the interior seats/leather and stereo/navigation, put $2000 into the suspension and you will have a $60000 car that will run circles around a stock 996TT, have a nicer interior, and better stereo. Oh yeah, and you'll have enough money left over to buy a spare Z06.
If you really want to get crazy, you can spend $12K to put twin turbos on the Z06 and you will kill pretty much anything on the road (and maybe even yourself!).
True, the Vette name doesn't have quite the cache of Porsche, but for less than 1/2 price you definitely get more than your money's worth.
Probably been discussed a billion times.. But has anyone ever addressed the gearing as I mentioned before? If you gear the 996's (TT or GT3) to similar ratio's as the Z06, we would have a much different story I am sure.
PS - I ran against a 2003 Z06 with minor mods (He claimed about 425 HP in his car). Let me tell you - that car is FAST as hell. We ran from about 20MPH and I had him the whole way. He let off around 130 when he realized he wasnt going to catch me, I let off at about 145. He caught up to me and asked what kind of HP I was running and what Mods I had. I told him stock, 380 HP non-turbo. The guy was beside himself.. Said I have given him the best race he has ever had and couldnt believe I beat him.
I have to say the main advantage point I had was that my car can REV to heaven... He started to pull strong in 2nd and 3rd, almost looking like he might over take me, but when he had to shift I was able to keep on the power. I only had him by 1/2 a car length, and as we increased velocity, the lead began to increase as well, so he gave up.
Like I said - still a vette but man, the thing is a rocket. Do what Trojan Man said and you got yourself one hell of a fast car. I love Porsche, but how can you beat that for $60K?
ROCKITMAN - You got yourself one hell of a fast car. Enjoy!
From a standing start, the story may have been different. If a cheap straight line car is what you are impressed with at $60K, you can mod a WRX for considerably less that will perform both on the drag strip and the track.
Maybe, maybe not. Who says the Z06 is a cheap straight line car? Many people on here have said if it werent for the stock brakes, the Z06's could beat stock 996TT's on the track and as it is, they sometimes DO even with the crappy brakes. You can have your POS WRX and enjoy it.
Since you are an addict I figured you would have know that...
PS - We went from a standing start first and it was even.. But he missed second gear so we went again from 20MPH. I am sure out of 10x there could be 10 different results depending on reflex's and mistakes, etc.
It was a PCA autocross, next month we have a big 2 day autocross at tobay beach (sponsored by my shop)... come check it out!
Where on LI are you?
You should stop by the shop in huntington and give me a ride
I have a X50tt and have driven ZO6's on the street and on the track. The cars are nearly equal. The ZO6 cannot pull away down a straight. Handling is different since the Zo6 turns in better, but the tt comes out harder. In my opinion, there is no significant performance difference that an experienced driver can feel. The better driver will be faster in either car.
The ZO6 is a better value. THe tt is a better car.
On the street, it depends on how hard you're willing to launch your tt (I'm not willing to do drop-clutch starts in my own car) and how hard you shift. The ZO6 is easier to drag (standing start wheelspin aside), and if you're not willing to torture your own car, it will be quicker across an intersection- but so are lots of cars that don't cost much.(Like any V8 muscle car with a locker, fat rear tires, and an automatic trans).AS
Hate to magazine race but in numerous head to head tests the 911TT is either as fast or faster than the Z06 in (this is the most important part) the same test area, same drivers, same conditions in the 0-60 & 1/4 mi. On the track, the better comparison would be the GT3, but the 911TT holds it's own, despite being 400 lbs. heavier.
The $ argument is a joke. Porsche cars have always been more expensive, always will be more expensive. Usually 2X the price for a comparable model (911 vs. regular Vette, 911TT or GT3 vs. Z06). Always has been that way, probably always will be. If you wanted to buy a car based on $$$ then you won't get a Porsche. It's doesn't make sense if that is all you are thinking about. Hell, you can buy a Mustang Cobra for $34K sink $1000 in mods and beat a Z06. That argument can always be made for a cheaper, and cheaper car. Porsche owners I feel like the overall balance of the car, they can take it to the track one day, then drive down Rodeo drive the next. World class performance, and world class status symbol. The Z06 is a hell of a car, but give me a GT3 or 911TT anyday. If you can't afford it, don't get one.
Re "magazine race"- the writers routinely brutalize the launch procedure in 4 wheel drive cars. That's why the tt always shines in 0-30 and 0-60. The ordinary owner could duplicate those times, but not very many times over. Cars like the ZO6 don't suffer the driveline shock that the 4 wheel drivers must absorb. That's why in the real world, driving your own car, the ZO6 is quicker. If you blow a launch in a ZO6, it's just burning rubber. If it goes wrong in your tt, it's a flat bed truck and new drive-line components. We'd all be quicker in the tt...if it was somebody else's. AS
AS - So what you are saying is that the Z06 is definitely faster than the Stock TT, which is what has been said and I suspected. I am surprised, but not shocked as it is a hell of a performer for the $$ as we all know. However, I am SHOCKED to hear you say that it is equal to a TT with X50 option. That I would never have guessed...
My buddy is in the car biz and I had a chance to pick up an 02 Z06 earlier this summer - I wish I had now. It was at wholesale and I could have kept the car for a year and not lost $$... Then I could really see for myself how it compares to the GT3, which I suspect would be no comparison and I would hate it. I got an 01 Vette from him, had it for 2 months and then dumped it cause it was a piece of crap. Aside from the powerplant, I cannot see the Z06 being much more of a quality ride since the extra 10K you pay for it is pretty much in the motor. He is getting an 02 TT in the next few weeks so I will get some time with that as well... I guess you are also confirming that the GT3 is the real deal as well since I was able to outrun the 425 HP Z06 - There are rumors that the GT3 will not only smoke the TT (stock and X50) on the track (same drivers), but it will also outrun the stock TT in acceleration... TT owners have argued with me before about this and of course we will all be biased to our own cars, but for $20K less how can you beat the GT3?? If they stick to what they say and only bring 750 to the States and do not make another one for another 4-5 years, this car should hold its value well and also better than the TT. Tell me if I am wrong thinking this...
DAN - I am in Merrick... Where exactly is your shop? I'll take a ride up there and introduce myself. I am not a big autocross fan and I will elaborate on that when I see you, but I plan on coming down to that to check it out as well.
We are in huntington station, just off rt. 110, near the train station. Aside from chasing cones for half a day autocross is good fun IMHO especially since DE is such a long drive away and i dont really enjoy driving on the streets... too many stupid people trying to kill you!
Anyway sorry for hijacking your thread here!
Ah, i thought you just wanted a general idea.
25 east to 110 north, after you go under the railroad tracks (the trainbstation is on the right) make a left onto railroad street, we are less than a mile down railroad street on your left. #130
you will know when you get there, railroad street is small and we usually have a good number of p-cars lined up outside.
ADOGNY,
I know you're interested in hard numbers, but I'm gonna get all subjective here anyway.
Thank you Rennlisters for reiterating what I've been saying in my posts for months:
"0-60 times on paper don't mean s**t in the real world."
I'm not going to rev to 4K then drop the clutch in my $85K 911 just to show some kid in a Camaro who's the man.
Prior to my two 911's, I drove a Viper. While there were some cars that sprinted faster on paper, nothing could beat it on the street. Viper's are idiot-proof to launch, and don't require attempting to snap the driveline to do it.
And some cars may be faster to 50MPH, some to 70MPH.
Did I feel superior after blowing away a Porsche? No, I felt silly, partly because I knew I'd get dusted in the curves.
Someone here has the best quote I've heard, really applies here:
"Average drivers want more power, great drivers want more performance."
Sorry for ranting.
-DT
I am not talking just 0-60, but thanks for your input. What do you drive now and how was the Viper? I have heard it is a piece of junk and all motor, true?
Well, if you want to get into the nitty gritties - you are paying for MUCH more than just a motor. With the Z06 package you get:
1. Better & More Powerful Engine
2. Modified Suspension designed for track use
3. Ultra-lightweight Titanium Exhaust system
4. Power Steering Cooler
5. Special Wheels w/ Goodyear SuperCar tires
6. Special badging on exterior & seats
7. Ultra-Rigid hardtop body not available on other models
8. Available Black/Red 2-tone interior not available on other models
Perhaps this is not the best argument to make in light of Fanman's ranting about price comparisons, but if Porsche put together a package like this (X50 + other goodies), it would be at least $25K - $30K! This makes the Vette Z06 package look like a bargain @ $10K if you ask me.
The Viper definitely was NOT a piece of junk, but it WAS unforgiving. It had exceptional grip, very quick steering, but crappy brakes. It's the kind of car you really have to stay on top of when driving it hard.
Other than the drone of the exhaust and rolling-pin tires (I had a GTS), it was surprisingly comfortable to drive, a definite conflict with what most people think. My biggest complaint was that the car is too big for a sports car. A 3/4-size Viper would be fantastic.
I drive an '03 C2 now, 6-spd, C18's, rigid susp, PSM, and a bunch of fluff. Way, way better car, much more useful, and higher all-around performance, IMO.
Still, that Viper could paste a big, cheesy grin on your face like nothing else!
Cheers,
-DT
ADOGNY, I don't drive a WRX so relax. I am a proud addict/member. Next time, do a search on faster this, faster that instead of wasting bandwidth on a post that just feeds your ego as a "GT3" owner.
If this was such waste of time to you, why did you bother to read it and why did you bother to respond? Sorry if you felt it was not an important topic - you could have easily moved on to the next post and ignored it in that case. Nothing wrong with me wanting to learn more about the Z06 and what the car has to offer vs. Porsche to satisfy my curiosity. Sounds like you have the EGO telling me what posts are a waste of time to you..
Like I said - dont read them next time.. Enjoy the WRX!
So if someone responsed with hard data that the Z06 was faster were you planning on rushing off and trading your GT3 in on one? Threads like this are pointless because they serve no real purpose but provide much fun when the people get bent out of shape from comments they receive questioning their justification for their cars.
As for why you bought a GT3 over a Turbo, I don't know. I bought one (well ordered at this point since I'm waiting for delivery) because I wanted a Porsche with an actual race heritage since I want a car I can drive on the track without worring about engine reliability. That doesn't mean I expect to be faster than every Turbo or Z06 I encounter, especially since both cars can be made much faster for relatively few K$. Nor do I care how well the GT3 holds its value as I'm buying it to enjoy under the "Enjoy it/get it while you can" principles. If it depreciates like my Boxster S, so what? That doesn't diminish how much fun I'll have driving it. And I plan on driving mine until my will sends it to a new home.
Again - you can view it as pointless in your mind. All I wanted to know was how the 2 cars compare to one another in stock form. My curiosity is not pointless to me, and I fail to see what is wrong with that. Your way of doing business may be different than mine or someone elses - if resale is a factor to me and not you, so be it. I am buying the car to enjoy it as well, but no matter how you look at it, it is a rather large investment and there is nothing wrong with being concerned as to how that will perform over time as you would with any other investment. Sure it aint real estate, but after seeing what happened to all the 996 TT's dropping so hard, is this again a bad thing?? You spend your money how you want, as will I - Dont knock me about my ways if they differ from yours.
I know there is always a faster car out there.. I think we all know that. I didnt know all that much about the Z06 as I am not a Corvette fan so I posed the question looking for an answer, not criticism. I bought the GT3 because it is a special car - period. And I am very happy with my decision.. Doesnt mean I now have to close my mind and be a Porsche drone. I like to learn - as simple as that...
Thanks for the entertainment....
ADOGNY: I thought you were looking for justification that the GT3 was a better choice than a Z06, my apologies. I don't think you're going to get a good answer to your question though until one of the car magazines does an updated shootout.
And you're right every person is free to have their own reasons for buying. Personally I think the GT3 is a more an emotional purchase decision than a logical one and folks buying for the latter are less likely to be satisfied with the car than the former. Not knowing you or what made you decide on the GT3 I can't place your decision but mine was definitely emotional.
This thread started off with some real potential and there were many smart comments that added to an intelligent discussion. It was derailed by someone and this turned into a personal battle of wits.
I see this happen all too often and it's just sad. I know, this makes me sound like a bleeding heart liberal but I'm actually quite the opposite. I just don't see why some people have to criticize other people for asking what they think are "pointless" questions.
the gt3 stock has something wrong with its low end b4 5500 rpms. I dont buy the bulloney that its meants for a track when the gt3 cup car is in fact geared much lower than a stock gt3 road car.
So why did did porsche de-tune the gt3 like it did. because it would be be faster than a TT if it didnt. Look at the porsche website 0-60 times. GT3 is 4.3 seconds, TT is 4.2 and Gt2 is 4.1.
Looks like they have a certain order going on here.
The gT3 is 400 pounds lighter than a TT,and only 35 hp shy of a TT. It should outgun it by far.
Zippy said "But it's very weak in the TQ department."
With all due respect, I think you should lay off the "BC Bud"...you make a statement like that without having any justification. If it's so weak in the torque dept... Why is it that the TT only beats it by .1 seconds according to factory specs??? I would suggest you drive one before you make a judgement like that, although I hear that there are'nt too many out there for you Canadien folks...
This question has be discussed on both the Corvette and web boards many times. I have a Z06 and think Alex Stemer summed up the cars quite well. I agree with what he said. The Z06 is a better value and the TT is a better car - two desirable machines at different price points is the way I look at it.
Jim
I agree with Trojan Man.. Too many people rip you apart for asking questions on this board. If someone quotes something as fact that is truly wrong, then by all means correct the person so we all know what the correct information is. There is no need to lash out when you disagree with the topic - I read tons of posts on here and I do not agree with the writers. I skip them and move on to the next.
We are all Porsche owners so we obviously love and appreciate the cars for what they are. But we would not be real sports car enthusiasts if we werent at least a little curious about what the competition has to offer. I will be the first to be Porsche biased and you have seen me very GT3 over TT biased on here - but I will never close my mind and eyes to other products as a measuring stick to how these production performance cars on the track and in the real world..
Call me crazy I guess...
There's a guy I know who has the perfect answer to this dilemma. He owns all of the following (yes at the same time):
996 C4 Cab
996 TT
GT2
GT3 Street Version
2 x GT3 Cup Cars (he's a race team owner)
Cayenne Turbo
All that and a hot wife and a house in newport....kinda makes me wonder where I went wrong to "only" afford 1 Turbo.
No I won't say his name if you're wondering, but he sold a major plumbing fixture company a few years ago for somewhere between $20MM & $40MM.
Your right Steve, I guess the herky jerky tach has got to go...It has probably been driving you guys nuts!!! I guess I have been spending too much time on line rather than driving my new baby...For what it's worth, it's been raining the past couple of days up here and after 3 days of multiple Zaino polish coats and other detailing, I just could'nt get it dirty..."That car is Sooooo spoiled..." Anyways, my new temporary avatar will makes it's debut sometime tonight, until I get some sunny weather to take some real good pics for my final cut avatar. I thought the tach was a good stand in for the cop flasher I had on yesterday. Take care...
Chris
I just did a HPDE event at Sebring last week.
There is usually a Porsche Turbo running in my group.
Also, there was a Black Z06 this time along with a Turbo.
The vette ran with the Turbo around Sebring. I have the video from in my car, well, about 20 seconds of video as they blast by me in my Audi S4, it appeared I had put my car in reverse on the back straight they were going so fast, both of those cars have got alot of go-go.
Anyway, Z06 can hang with the Turbo, driver's appeared pretty closely matched, and so are the cars...
But, in the end, I'd rather be driving the Porsche.
The Porsche is faster....
The video's I have are of a stock 996tt not moddified.
The Z06's are great untill you get into a real road situation.. (ruff road on a fast turn..) there skidpad much like the 80's cammaro's drop to less then .80....
My first post on the boards and I hope I am not re-hashing old crap. But as a Z06 owner researching my soon to be upgrade to a Porsche, I'll give you my take on the matter which is similar to the value/better analogy used in another:
1 package of Peppermint Lifesavers - $0.59
1 package of Starbucks After Coffee Peppermints - $2.19
Both are relatively equal in getting my breath fresh.
Starbucks mints last a bit longer due to small size.
Starbucks mints come in a sexy metal package, Lifesavers don't.
Starbucks mints taste slightly better to me (IMO).
If all I want to do is get my breath fresh, I'll buy Lifesavers that have not one thing wrong with them.
If I want to really enjoy getting my breath fresh, I'll buy Starbucks mints.
I know the price to performance ratios between the mints and cars aren't exactly the same, but the Scotch is killing my desire to think any harder.
Thanks for allowing me to join and post, and I look forward to upgrading my Lifesavers to a Porsce.
Christian "El Duderino"
Trojan Man... I know the same GUY!.... I believe he also has a 959 in his collection... and he is adding 2 new race cars...you also forgot his fully loaded Semi to haul the CC's.... Do you know Greg Fuller?
while I've had an 03 Z06, Viper GTS, 2 NSX, 1 993 and others, I have not owned a 996 TT. But I can say that the Z was quite impressive even in build quality. Notice I didn't say interior materials. I said build quality. There were no rattes, hard bumps brought no flex at all, doors were very light but closed solidly, power and handling were first class and nothing I've owned came close.
When I drove a 996 TT I felt like I was on a majic carpet. It was so smooth it was borderline boring. I would have to get an exhaust, lower the car, etc to make it feel more raw. But hands down the we all know the 996 is better and I aggree that short of a 5K and dump clutch start the Z would likely win stop light drags. However 1/4 mile runs and highway would probably be another story as the turbos begin to breath and stretch their legs.
Here are some pics

With regards to the performance comparison between GT3 and TT (I know nothing about Corvettes), I can tell you that a programme called Top Gear in the UK have been running a bunch of cars on their test-track over the last year (the last series and the new series now currently showing). They have the same test driver each time. Last year, the stock TT did 1 min 31 on the circuit in the wet. This year the new GT3 did it in 1 min 27 secs also in very wet conditions. Imagine what it would do to the TT in the dry? I was a bit surprised at this in the wet conditions but it just shows how good that car is.
Forget 0-60 times and 400lb/ft of torque, this car is not boring by any stretch of the imagination.
I find it interesting that threads of this type often leave out the most important piece of the puzzle.....The Driver.
Maybe people interested in these threads constantly quote the Buff Books ET's instead of going to the track and putting their driving skills on the line?
