Apologies if this is an ancient "asked and answered" topic -- search didn't yield what I was looking for.
I have had my 2008 2.7L
Cayman
for about three months, and it has only 1000 miles on it since the last oil change right before my purchase. Oil level shows all the way to the top, which I understand to be too full, by maybe 2-3/10s of a quart. Trying to avoid
AOS
issues, so figured I would remove the filter, dump that (and send to Blackstone for analysis), install a new filter while I was in there, and hopefully drop the level enough to eliminate the top bar on the "virtual dipstick" . (As an aside, the filter housing doesn't have much oil in it, so not surprisingly upon re-install my dipstick is still maxxed out).
I bought this
Mahle
OX 128/1D filter on

despite the fact that it said it didn't fit, because it shows it is compatible with 996.225.107.XX
The filter I tried to replace was a Hengst. Amazon link:

The Hengst also shows up as 992.225.107.XX. But, it shows different dimensions then the Mahle. Also, Amazon shows that the Hengst fits my car, and that the Mahle is not compatible with it.
Finally, when I removed the Hengst, and tried to install the Mahle, the Mahle inside diameter appeared too small to be pushed onto the round piece at the bottom of the housing. Rather than force it, I just reinstalled the old Hengst filter. But, given the aforementioned oil level, I will likely try this again in the next few weeks.
Questions: 1) Is 996.225.107.XX (XX being the brand) all you need to worry about? Every filter with this number is identical? 2) If yes, why are the dimensions different on Amazon? 3) Was the narrow inner diameter of my Mahle filter just in need of being forced onto that circular lip on the housing? 4) Anyone have any idea how you end up with 3D dimensions on a cylindrical oil filter where each dimension is different from the other two? It is a cylinder -- what are the measuring on Amazon? (e.g., Mahle is 10" x 7" x 5.3".)
The fact that I can't find anything about this anywhere indicates I should have just pushed the Mahle filter on harder and I'm worried about nothing. Thanks in advance.

Ding ding ding, assuming it's the correct one there are several variants specific to models. My procedure (not necessarily the only way just the way I did it) was to press the filter into the cartridge, it then gives way to a little pop and seats on the bottom of the cannister spring top. The open end of the filter ready to screw in should be symmetrical in respect to the cannister circle shape on the threaded end and flat within the cannister, then reassemble. Also, you couldn't take it back so it was either success or complete failure anyway. Or buy an L&N spin on convertor and be done with the cannister system, it's completely reversible and now that I have one I'm a big fan other than the weight. Mahle spin on filters are also cheaper than the cartridge so it pays for itself if you keep the car.
My 2010
Cayman S
takes this size.

Thanks. I think the
987.2
gen has different filters than .1.
Was just looking around for a filter for my annual change. That's a good price on
Amazon
. The
next
best price I found was from ECS, but you have to have $49 in purchases for free shipping. I would prefer to support ECS, so I will probably go with them and just purchase 3 filters.
