Hi y’all 2008
Porsche Boxster
S third water pump impeller chewed up could this be because of a worn ims bearing ?? Or some main bearing in less than a year this will be third pump in a year replaced
I would find it difficult to impossible to relate water pump failures to a worn IMS bearing. Or a main bearing. Not happening on a belt driven pump. I'd be looking at the installation technique, perhaps the idler bearings for the serpentine belt idlers, and the brand of the replacement pumps. IMS I wouldn't even think about.
Well something is amiss. Not bearing related IMHO. When you removed the belt to do water pump. Were the other pulleys checked for play /wear/malfunction. Is the belt tensioner system functioning properly ? Are these OEM parts ?
The first was not and thought ok so I ordered a German brand from pelican I thought one of the rollers were squeaking sprayed lube seemed to do the trick no play but now that you said the tensioner maybe it might lie there but it’s got me baffled cause the composite impellers get disengrated I mean gone so if it’s pulling on the pulley I guess could wear the bearing out and get it to wobble eventually and chew the impeller up
Are you running the factory coolant or factory recommended coolant? Including the
986
I have owned a
Boxster
more than 16 years, zero water pump issues. I have heard about the impellers and their issues but third water pump for you? It's something local.
I agree with something local. If the tensioner has a bad bearing, or a bad hydraulic damping cylinder there could be resonances feeding into the belt that is causing the breakdown of the composite impellers. Also, it crossed my mind that some of the original impeller might have traveled through the cooling system and back to the pump, causing damage to the impeller.
I'd start out with a new pump, a new belt and an entire new tensioning assembly. I seem to recall the
987.1
engine has two idler pulleys (the
987.2
9A1 only has one..) IMHO - both should be replaced and the hydraulic piston assembly.
