Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

After creating some new swear words I inspected the damage.
Leading evidence: 'Inspect damage' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check damage' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. I'm sure I've seen threads where people have fitted mesh behind them, so I assume it's do-able...

I've used prestige salavge in Leeds for several items recently, they have a very impressive stock level.

I agree with John - look around for a good used PU, assuming that it hasn't touched the wing, headlight, or anything behind the PU.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

My wife left both of her mobiles at home and so was totally uncontactable - which didn't help as she had the sensible car.
The bl**dy snow has struck again in Manchester. Last time, I just didn't touch my car. However, tonight I get a phonecall from my school telling my that my son's had an accident and that I need to come and pick him up right away. My wife left both of her mobiles at home and so was totally uncontactable - which didn't help as she had the sensible car.
As the snow had just started falling, I decided to risk it, and took it very slow. All was going well (apart from needing a couple of attempts at hill starts), until I had to turn into the school. Despite crawling along, turning my wheel did exactly nothing. Unfortunately, neither did my brakes. The result was my 996 got very up close and personal with a tree. OUCH.
After creating some new swear words I inspected the damage. To me it looks like it's restricted to the front bumper. The bonnet looks fine, as does the offside headlight (which was near the point of contact).
Some pictures are below... Please excuse the quality - I've ramped the brightness up so that you can make out a bit more detail.
Could anyone let me know a rough price for getting this repaired? At a guess I'd say that the bumper needs replacing, and will therefore need to be sprayed (will that mean that the bonet and wings also need to be sprayed to blend in?). My
insurance
excess is £500 - so I guess I need to know sharpish whether or not it's worth me claiming.
GAH!
Sorry to hear that mate, my misses has just rung me tellin me she just nearly crashed!
I would look on ebay and try to find one in colour, you may be lucky and avoid having other panels painted.
For a new bumper and paint job, I bet your looking at £3k plus, so for that money you may as well claim.
What colour is the car?
Thanks John. Hope your missus is ok.
Good idea on the replacement bumper. It looks like there's nothing on ebay, or the Porsche Graveyard (Douglas Valley Breakers) though...
Sorry to hear your trouble.
I agree with John - look around for a good used PU, assuming that it hasn't touched the wing, headlight, or anything behind the PU. You should be able to pick one up for £250 - a new one is £500 in primer - and get it sprayed if necessary (about £250).
Try Porsch-Apart.
Might be worth finding out about this one. Title says 996 (and pic is 996), but description says 997. They have a few Porsche bumpers, so maybe it's a typo in the description.

Thanks Richard, I'll take a look at Porsch-Apart now (they're only 5 miles away as it happens).
Doesn anyone know if the bumpers were changed as part of the facelift? Will a bumper from a pre-facelift 996 fit a post facelift 996?
I've found some used bumpers on ebay. Is this the sort of thing you'd suggest picking up and getting resprayed?

Oh, and what do you mean by PU?
I've used prestige salavge in Leeds for several items recently, they have a very impressive stock level. As with everything though, nothings that cheap!
good luck getting the parts.
PU=PolyUrethane, or the generic name for the plastic the bumper is made from.
The bumpers for facelift and pre-facelift are different and are not interchangeable.
A friend of mine works in a bodyshop (I am in Mcr) and has worked on previous cars of mine as foreigners. He's a good guy. PM me if you want his details.
Depends if your going through
insurance
or not :?:
Lloyds Autobody are the approved porsche repair cantre in the North West
http://lloyds-autobody.com/index.html
They are not cheap tho but do a first class job
I'm hoping to not go through the
insurance
. Certainly, if the only damage is the front bumper then it's not worth my while (as I've got a £500 excess).
Hopefully it's only the bumper that's damaged. However, it looks like the a/c condensors and radiators are located directly behind the bumper. Are any likely to have been damaged given the point of impact (right on the offside corner of the bumper)? I assume I can test the a/c condensors are still working by simply trying out the aircon. How can I check for damage to the radiators? Will there be any obvious way I can check without dismantling the car?
In better news, I think I've located a replacement bumper. I gave porschebreaker.com a call and they're sure they've got in a front bumper for a facelift 996, not only that but it's in Seal Grey too! I'm going to head over on Saturday to check out the condition - but all being well I may have solved this problem!
(where's the 'fingers crossed' icon?!)
How difficult is it to remove and replace the front bumper yourself? I'm sure I've seen threads where people have fitted mesh behind them, so I assume it's do-able...
Thanks again to everyone for your help - this is an excellent forum!
