Hey - update is that I have not had time to check on it with the dealer, but plan to hang out at an Indie tonight and perhaps they can see what is going on...
Leading evidence: 'Replace button and it works normally' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check on it' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. There are some special settings that have to be changed for the memory set to work.

As C4CRNA mentioned, if it's been off 5 days, alarm goes to "sleep" - check your owner's manual for specifics.

I would recommend taking a look at the key innards before going to the expense of all new keys.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Okay 996 experts....
Key fob is no longer working either the front trunk nor door locks. Battery is relatively new and no changes to routine with my car. What is the likely culprit? Oh and of course the alarm is no longer triggered by the key either.
Try this: Take the battery out of the key fob and reinstall it upside down for about 15 seconds. Remove the battery and install it correctly. See if that "jump starts" the fob.
DO you have a second key fob? Does that one work?
OK that is about as stupid as I have felt in a long time (since breakfast at least)
So I have not used mine in a couple months and should have checked it before trying this rediculous "trick" but after I did it the thing seems to work much better than I remember....
but why.... with the battery upside down both FOB connectors contact the same polarity of the battery...that should have no effect at all...
(though I cannot discount that my FOB seems to be at least working when I thought it was dead)
You can discharge the circuit by simple removing the battery for a few minutes.
I would not recommend inserting the battery backwards, unless specified
by the manufacturer (I never saw a DC circuit that requires that by the manufacturer).
On the other hand, in some instances when inserting the battery backwards,
you may have a fast battery discharge, and/or a hot little battery followed by a little explosion!
one of ours died last fall. pc board had to be replaced . cost (including 19% sales tax) 174 euros. when they change out the pc board they have to change out both and we had to bring in all three keys.
This is the procedure specified by Porsche FYI.
FWIW:
Re-synchronisation:
Switch on ignition with key and valid transponder.
 Switch off ignition.
Remove ignition key from steering lock.
Operate transmitter within 6 seconds after the key has been removed.
If the LED on the hand−held transmitter stays dark when the transmitter is operated, this is an indication of either an empty battery or a faulty hand−held transmitter.
Radio transmission is OK if the LED on the transmitter flashes when the transmitter is operated and the alarm readiness lamp on the dashboard flashes rapidly.
Ok will give this a try today. Battery is next to new, remote indicator light works fine when button depressed, drive the car every day, tried the reverse the battery trick to no avail. Hope this one works or it means that i need either a new remote or reflash. Thanks guys.
BTW, what are the specs on the battery? Is it a simple watch type battery you can pick up at nearly any drug store or Walmart? Didn’t find it listed in the OM
According to the factory manual...you will need the reset done by PIWIS or PST2...for all keys you have. Sorry. Hopefully you have a friendly stealer so you don't get taken for the reset.
yeah if the trial does not work on the way home, I will head over to the dealer. Will be racing the 24 Hours of Lemons against my service advisor - maybe he will cut me a break so that I dont put him in the tire barrier
ok so i tried that process and the fob light worked but no indicator light from the car and did not re-synch. Looks like I am at the mercy of the dealer. Boo.
I have to get a second key(with fob) and just got a price from the dealer. eek!
$100 to cut the key
$180 for the fob part
$64 to reset both keys to the car
plus 13% tax
$388.72 CAN.
Hey,
I can't believe the price for a working key for these cars.
I just bought a new key and fob for my new-to-me 2000. I paid $100 for the key and $100 for the fob. What really galls me is they then have the nerve to charge for programming. If I have to pay for the key and fob, the programming should be included in the price. Otherwise, what good is the fob?
Anyway, I have one working fob and one that doesn't work. No way do I need another for that price.

Yes, 2032 enegizer bunny, I just ran to walgreens $4.00 and man so this is what a good battery is like. I had done the antenna mod and it never seem to work that good but I suppose my battery was always low also.

Eurowerks or at Dan's place? Did we ever meet? I used to attend those a couple years ago but moved away in mid 07. Tell those guys Scott says hello. You may know Krista W. She has a Seal Gray 996 similar to yours.
Also, that reverse polarity procedure mentioned above is correct. I read it for myself in the TSBs available at Renntech.
Good luck.
Make sure if you have memory seats they work with all keys before you leave. There are some special settings that have to be changed for the memory set to work.
So finally went to the dealer and it was the FOB, even though it lit up and new battery and all that. After a while thy just wear out I guess. It was $300 with the programming. I feel dirty.
Mine went thru the laundry and it ruined one of the micro buttons. I replaced the button and it works normally. I would suggest....if your fob isn't working, check to see if it's the button s before replacing it
I'm hopefully picking up a C4s next week assuming my PPI goes well. I will need TWO new keys.. current one has been glued together and remote functions don't work.. Is there any option outside of taking it to the dealer to get this done? I could ask local independent, but thought i'd get opinions here first.
Very old thread. If you want two working remote keys you will have to go to the nearest Porsche dealer. There you can order new keys which will come with key tags that will have to be programmed into the car. Dealer is the only route on this one. And hold onto your wallet...it is very expensive, but the only way. You can transfer the metal blade (laser cut key) to a new remote.
If it's the only way, it's the only way... Sounds like you're suggesting I can at least save some $ by utilizing the existing metal blade for one of the new remotes?
I would recommend taking a look at the key innards before going to the expense of all new keys. The keys for my 2002 were horrid but it was just the rubber bits -- the button covers, and the buttons below them in particular. That stuff is available, although you will need to be handy with a soldering iron. I have two perfectly functioning keys now.
Here is the source for the buttons.

Key cases can be found on eBay I think, or maybe I got them from one of the online Porsche stores? Can't remember. You just swap all the innards over, presto, Bob's yer uncle.
Old indeed... And funny to read someone complained about the price of a new key in 2009. IIRC my second key cost over 500.00. bought the brass and fob from sunset, 30 to get the brass cut, and another 100 at my Indy for him to work his magic with pwiws and info from the dealer retrieved from my vin. But the new key is awesome.
I just got a '03 C4S. Neither of the remotes worked. I changed the batteries in both and both light up bright, and tried EVERYTHING to re-sync them!
I got one working by turning the ignition on then off, then holding the remote button for 20 sec.
The other one lights up, but won't unlock/lock the car.
I even tried the "hold the button, lock and unlock procedure:
https://jmgporsche.co.uk/itemlist/tag/key
Nope still doesn't work.
