Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Reported cause
Friends of mine did have a popout issue in their new-at-the-time Boxster S, so I knew the issue was real.
Leading evidence: 'real' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'real' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install earlier in its life' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I couldn't do my IMSB because my car had a late model engine installed earlier in its life.

Is the expertise to make these changes only at specific shops, like LN?

RMS leak: RMS you do at time of clutch change unless significant oil - right?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The issues with SOME 996's are well documented re: IMS, RMS, 2nd gear pop-out and cracked heads.
What are your
estimated costs
for fixing these problems (before they occur).
IMS: I see about $2.5K for IMS replacement LN Engineering
RMS leak: RMS you do at time of clutch change unless significant oil - right? I know there is conjecture about some RMS leaks being caused by a non-catastrophic IMS issues.
2nd degree pop-out: Install detent (GBOX)-cost?
Any other major issues with early 996's?
Is the expertise to make these changes only at specific shops, like LN?
Thanks
I got a quote for the IMS replacement with the LN unit a few months ago. It was $3K at a Porsche indy. I cant imagine the RMS would be anymore at that point. I did not realize that the 2nd gear pop out was an issue on the na 996's but the detent is $200 or so I believe. There are DIY's on installing it if you do a search.
I would take a look at LN's IMS solution. If I were in the market for a na 996, I would have this installed.
The LN engineering IMS bearing kit is $650. Additional labor is minor if your transmission is already out (RMS, clutch). $2,500-$3,000 should cover the IMS bearing
including with a full clutch replacement!
If you don't need a clutch replacement, you can go for the Guardian Jr. for $250 which will give you early detection of IMS bearing failure. If your car is a tip, or you don't need a clutch, or your car is a 2005+, the Guardian Jr. seems like an inexpensive way to help relieve the massive IMSB paranoia.
To me, the following strategy seems pretty sound:
Install a $250 guardian Jr.
Enjoy the car. Use good oil. Change it every 5,000 miles.
If your transmission is down for a clutch, RMS repair or any other reason, go ahead and spend the extra ~$700 and install an LN IMSB.
If your Guardian Jr. gives you an alert, install an LN IMSB.
I don't understand the never-ending M96 gloom and doom... The failure rate isn't that high. It's more an issue if you don't catch the failure in the early stages (bearing seal and bearing race start to deteriorate), you can do severe engine damage (ball bearings rattling around your engine). The Guardian won't prevent the failure, but supposedly is very effective in early detection, preventing the severe engine damage which is really the big issue...
My detent was $150 from GBox. I had the transmission out for a clutch replacement so installing it was dead simple. It can absolutely be done with the trans in the car, but you have to be ready to work blind a bit.
A shop would have to be greedy to charge you an hours labour, but if that's all you were having done then I could see it including hoisting etc.
If the car is up on the hoist for any reason however it would be a half hour extra tops and if the trans was out then maybe 5 minutes.
The difference is subtle but noticeable. I always felt that 2nd gear wasn't landing as deeply as it should, but I had no pop out issues. It's better now.
Friends of mine did have a popout issue in their new-at-the-time Boxster S, so I knew the issue was real. Porsche declined to fix their problem under warranty by the way - because they autocrossed the car and talked about it on-line.
PS:
I couldn't do my IMSB because my car had a late model engine installed earlier in its life. I was well prepared to spend $700 for parts but a friend had already lent me the tools. If you had to purchase the tools then add a few hundred (I think).
