included in the kit is a connector where you can connect directly to the battery and run the connection wire, so it comes out near the bonnet hinge.
Leading evidence: 'Run connection wire' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). If so is there one with a small solar panel that can be used for cars not kept in a garage.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Looking to buy one of the Porsche trickle chargers to keep the battery topped up when not in use. Anyone know if they cut in / out when the battery is charged / discharged :dont know: Dont want to fry the battery :duh:
They work very well. I keep mine plugged in during the week, (3 weeks over the cold snap) and itnis a godsend. Defo get one if you dont drive it a lot :thumb:
I'm after a trickle charger as well.
My cars really suffered over the Christmas period and only just started last Saturday.
Are they easy to fix to the car? If so i'll order one later.
Neil
This maybe a stupid question but I assume they plug into the mains. If so is there one with a small solar panel that can be used for cars not kept in a garage. Also I have seen ones with a cigar lighter socket adapter. I don't understand how that works. Doesn't the cigar lighter socket get its power from the battery? If these questions are so stupid please send the plain white van round now. :? :?
... coming right up
The CTEK (and most systems) plug into the mains.
There are solar systems, and they will say if they are.
Check out Maplin (or eBay): - get a decent 12W one if you can

The cigarette lighter does gets its power "from the battery" - as do the terminals on top of the battery
... but, diodes aside, electrons go both ways!
The act of charging is forcing energy back into the battery.
One thing to note, some 996.1 / 3.4 (and others?) have switchable 12v socket, so the cigarette lighter only works (is connected to the battery) when the ignition is on. Not ideal when you want to leave it charging.
You could always add an external weather-proof port (included with some chargers - such as CTEK) that allows charging without needing access to the inside (passenger compartment, boot or engine bay)

I have just bought one of these

They are pretty idiot proof and I think is the newer 2009 edition at a fantastic price. They even protect you against incorrect polarity connection.
The cigarette/12v adapter is for charging through this connection instead of direct to the battery. It is a popular option amongst 911 guys as it saves you opening the bonnet and having to open the battery compartment. You would still need to run it off the mains even with the 12v adapter though.
Here is a link to plug adapter:

Obviously, it's important to check you have a live feed even when ignition is off through your 12v socket. (Maybe try your in-car phone charger etc while ignition is off)

If you can't put a ctek charger on it i would not bother: I've got a 5W solar panel: did very little to keep batt charged, the voltage and current fluctuates too much in the winter sun to do any good- you are better off getting a new battery from halfords which comes with their no quibble 4 year g'tee and mistreating the batt to destruction and claiming on the g'tee when it dies.
if you like classic cars as well (i cant be the only one!!?) practical classics are giving a CTEK away for a years subscribtion to pracical classics. (subscriction is about £55 and you need to subscribe for only a year) it is a bit of a weedy charger though, but for me who, will leave it fully charged, but stood in a garage for 4 weeks, it should be fine - me thinks.

I am after one of these and the fag lighter option sounds the best. It's a pain doing a trickle charge opening up the bonnet, removing the plastic cover etc.
This option seems quicker and more convenient, however I am sorry to sound thick, but how do you get the wire(s) out of the car's interior to the mains without leaving the door/window open? Car is garaged by the way.
included in the kit is a connector where you can connect directly to the battery and run the connection wire, so it comes out near the bonnet hinge. The end of the connector has a flap to stop water getting in.
(i have not got mine yet (its in the post), but there are a few pictures on this forum showing the connections if you do a search.
