Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Also a dealer said to change the brake reservoir fluid.Another dealer said if it hasnt been done regularly and it is separated to leave it alone because it might hasten replacing the abs pump.Knowledgeable advice would be appreciated

Hi, I change my oil every year (never get enough miles to meet any regular oil change intervals), it is just good practice to do so I believe.

If the brake/clutch fluid (Pentosion) is too bad to run through your system, remove it from the reservoir directly & replace with fresh fluid from a sealed container, then flush it through the rest of the system.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The manual also says every 15k miles. Not many car enthusiasts would agree with that.
First read your manual and service booklet looking for severe service intervals. Short trips low usage = severe service.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, that means it absorbs moisture. Moisture will corrode/destroy pistons, calipers & pumps in your brake system. Most manufacturers recommend 2-3 year fluid changes. The moisture in the fluid will also lower the boiling point of the fluid. Fluid is not compressible, steam is, result = boiling hot brakes go to the floor with greatly reduced stopping power. Flush the fluid now.
To a lesser extent oil picks up combustion byproducts, acids and moisture, ever notice what comes out of the tail pipe while the car is warming up? Steam and water, which also ends up in the oil. Older oil, not just higher mileage, has more junk in it than fresh oil.
Good practice is to change at 5-6k intervals or before storage. Especially with the IMS bearings in these engines.
I do regular mantainence on 996s......
This is based on what I see everyday on Florida cars...
Oil at 7500 miles is dirty, filter has some Debri....
oil at 10000......oil is black, filter heavy....
Oil at 15000.......oil is very black....filter heavy and collapsed.....
We recommend 7500 miles or 1 year at our shop...
Always make sure a new crush washer is used and o-ring on the filter canister
Hi, I change my oil every year (never get enough miles to meet any regular oil change intervals), it is just good practice to do so I believe. I also flush the brake fluid as well every couple of years or so, it is easy to do yourself, "Motive Products" sells a good pressure bleeder and it is inexpensive and easy to use, you will feel a difference in the pedal as well. I can't see that leaving the old fluid will help the ABS pump as any moisture in the system will corrode all related parts as stated by FPB111. Doing these yourself is easy and helps you to be more in tune with your car, give it a go.
If the brake/clutch fluid (Pentosion) is too bad to run through your system, remove it from the reservoir directly & replace with fresh fluid from a sealed container, then flush it through the rest of the system. Change oil every 5,000 to 7,500 miles depending on how much are highway miles, but once a year minimum.
I usually change the motor oil twice a year and drive approximately 6000 miles or less a year. I use a summer time grade in the beginning of the year and winter grade towards the end of the season.
Read at least the first 10 paragraphs of LN Engineering's paper on "Oil" for your Porsche.
Oils: What motor oil should I use? Which oil is best for my Porsche or aircooled engine?
Some of you are going far too long between oil changes. And do open up the oil filter, spread it out and run a magnet though it on both sides.
I cut the filter ever oil change. It is a good base line to start with as it show what's flowing in the oil. This is on my Boxster with 79,000 miles. This is clean. The black spots on the filter is the plastic cage that I cut through.
