Having worked in service mode so much I got complacent and didn’t take the rear window strap off before closing the roof. I heard a pop and the roof was broke. In perfect working order beforehand and I hate myself for breaking something while there are so many things I’m trying to fix.
The forward right side socket was broke but I had a spare. That didn’t fix it. I ordered a couple of gears for the transmission as nothing else is visibly wrong. Before I take the transmissions out, is there an obvious solution?
Oh, in the video I’m helping the roof move with upward pressure. Otherwise, the clamshell just keeps balking in the same spot.
Argh! Can’t figure out how to add the video!
Thanks!
Sorry no video. Took it apart and found the teeth on the odometer gear broken. The problem now is the replacement gears don’t have the vertical shaft which has the broken teeth.
Apparently there is supposed to be a metal hub (part#?) which fits into the part I do have. The broken one looks to be aftermarket and is all one piece.
Oh, no! Sorry to hear it.
After my recent top repair, I'm going to be religious about ensuring the strap is back in place. Thanks for the reminder.
Are you saying that it's teeth on the gear at the spindle, and not the outermost teeth that go to the worm drive? Should replacement gears come with center gears at the spindle?
I think we’re on the same page and it seems they don’t. This is the part that’s missing and I can’t seem to find it.
Key question is about that smaller, second gear - what is it made out of? I have a feeling that it's a separate gear altogether. Is it made out of metal or plastic? The plastic gears intentionally work as a "fuse" per excessive force; they should fail before the actual metal gears fail.
Also, keep in mind that the left and right large plastic transmission gears are slightly different from each other; aftermarket sets often sell one in white, and the other in black.
The one circled in yellow is metal and fits into the replacement gears I have. I assume that pic is OEM as it’s off the Pelican site. The gears in my car are not OEM and combine both pieces into one plastic piece. The part I need is the center gear circled.
A couple more pics from Pelican. Anybody know a name for this piece? Nick from Pelican calls it a “hub”.
There seems to be no way to find the metal hub that fits into the plastic gear I purchased so I went ahead and ordered the one piece all plastic unit. These single piece units are all reviewed to be ill fitting and more susceptible to breakage than the OEM two-piece, metal/plastic, gears but the only option.
I'm guessing that's what the previous person did as well - they replaced it with the plastic one, which is why you're here as well.
Have you tried talking to PelicanParts directly, to see if they can identify the part? They're usually pretty helpful, and it's from a post on their webpage after all?
Thanks buddy. I did leave the question in the service post on their site. Hopefully someone will answer during the week.
Again, I wouldn't be terribly worried about the replacement gears. Again, the key thing to keep in mind is that these are intentionally designed to break as plastic "fuses" for excessive force. So if things aren't lined up exactly right and/or the system isn't running glassy smooth, my guess is that they should wear just fine. The fact that the metal sheared on yours -- I would have figured that the original plastic would have totally taken the hit there.
Per my previous messages, the key thing is to make sure which side is which. According to my records, white = left and black = right from the vendor that I bought mine from (but never installed). They were indeed slightly different as measured by my vernier caliper.
