Hey, was listening on cold starts and wondering if this was chain rattle. Found a good amount of debris in my filter on last change and was a bit concerned. Oil analysis said oil was good?! No high wear metal numbers. Anyways, there was metal sludge on the magnetic drain
plug
as well as glitter in the filter. I’m wondering if one of my tensioners has gone and a chain is loose. Here is a video of a cold start.
My usual response - I'd suggest buying a Mechanic's Stethoscope ($3.99
Harbor Freight
, less when it goes on sale) and trying to localize the noise that concerns you. While I could hear some noise in your video - it's impossible to say what it's coming from using a YouTube video.
Wonder if the timing chain tensioner is not doing its job here. you better check that out. I know plastic bits from them do show up in oil as they kinda break down over time
You know it's making an internal engine noise and evidence shows up on the oil filter, that should be enough to know you need to stop driving it. An oil analysis with the other evidence you stated seems like a waste of money IMO. If I was paying for repair I'd make the last drive to the mechanic or better yet consider a tow. Repairs and engine replacements for
Porsche
cars are sobering, better to catch it early.
I don’t disagree at all. I reread the OP… something not happy in there… $obering is right and im
afraid we’re going to start hearing more and more of this since the cars are getting closer to being old
So my chain guides are definitely starting to wear. Found hard black plastic bits with white on one side. Very small pieces though. Scoped the cylinders and did not see any bore scoring. Not burning any oil. The good news is I have another engine here to build and the plan is to swap it out eventually. I was wondering if changing the tensioners would be beneficial at this point on this engine though.
I’d say yes.. check it out first of course. I’d love to build a flat 6. I’ve only built a 3SGT MR2 motor, can’t be a ton different other than it laying down… although I’m sure it’s involved
Your chain guides needs a different oil to keep them going. I am using
Motul
V 300 Competition 5W-40 now. No chain noise. A couple of years ago, I was using
Mobil
FS 5W50 and after 1500 to 2000 miles, the chain really started to rattle I even had those metal threads on my magnetic drain
plug
. Changed to
Motul
V 300 5W40 Power and the noise went away and more importantly no filter black chain guide bits or drain
plug
metal threads.
Motul
changed their line up this past year, meaning that the
Motul
V 300 5w 40 Power is no longer available, replaced by the Competition V 300 5W 40 even though
AMAZON
still has it listed as V 300 Power 5W-40. Just when the shipment shows up, its the Competition version. I even set it back two times, but
Amazon
has not figured out their inventory control.
