I've used klima clean in the past, tried the spray up the hose under the bottom of the car, tried their product where you put in the passenger foot-well and when pressed it releases all the contents as you have the fans on max and quickly close the door.
These methods worked marginally and didn't last long.
I live in Denver area so not humid.
I know this is a common problem, and I have got into the habit of turning off the AC about 5 miles from home, but the smelly stuff has already taken root and I have to get to the source.
Neither worked and my car reeks of old urine.
I've read about people resolving stubborn smells by actually spraying the foam on the evaporator coil itself (somewhere under the hood) and letting it sit there a while to REALLY clean the nasty crap that's most likely causing the smell - if the problem was in the ducts then the other products would have worked.
I have tried to run a few searches but can't find a simple guide to access the evap coil to do this job.
MY 12 year old daughter is arriving this weekend and figured we would use the
Boxster
with the nice weather, but there's no way I would want her to smell this horrible smell.
Plus, I have been keeping this car fully maintained and a new upgrade every now and then so that this will be her first car as a 16th birthday gift.
It's in absolutely amazing condition, I had a new bumper,
LED lights
front and rear, entire paint job etc.
I think it would be an awesome first car for a cool 16 year old - almost a vintage
Porsche
by then
And I am still amazed by just how much stuff you can fit in the frunk and trunk spaces, and still gets a solid 27mpg on the freeway so it's also very practical.
Anyway, appreciate if someone could direct me to a guide to access the evap to clean it - I am pretty handy so all I need is pictures and a few instructions.
Have you tried removing the cabin air filter ( in frunk ) and spraying in there?
I have a ‘14 CS that’s developing a funky smell.
The cabin air filter was changed in Jan ‘18 by the previous owner at the 40k service.
I ordered a new cabin air filter and a can of Nextzett to try and address the issue.
Plus I’m guessing the old trick of turning off the AC compressor a couple miles from home to dry out the evaporator works on
981s
, right?
The problem with my car turned out to be unfortunately what another member had suggested and I encourage you to look.
Since I rarely user the car over the winter months, it sits on a
battery tender
in the garage.
Despite using mouse traps with bait, one mouse decided to use my cabin filter as a nest and the middle of the middle of the filter had been hollowed out and used as the nest.
Of course, the smell was literally dried mouse urine and feces from the filter.
I ended up putting a bait trap
next
to the filter under the hood, of course after buying a new filter, running Klima Klean through the car, then spraying a ton of lysol down the cavity and around the area to clean it thoroughly before replacing the filter.
No problems since.
Well step one is done, did the intake filter. Pretty dirty after 16 months and 13k miles:

Any update? I have the same problem in my
2016 Cayman

Bringing this back as there doesn't seem to be much specific
981
directions (that work) to get rid of the nasty vinegar smell.
Everyone says use nextzett 96110515 Klima-Cleaner Air Conditioner Cleaner vs Kool-It as kool it isn't as strong nor does it comes with as much product per can.
Home Depot
and Walmart sell outdoor, plastic and aluminum safe lemon scented Evac coil cleaners for $6 vs the $20 Klima will cost you, no tube so you would have to keep that from the Klima kit
I think if we can find the general location of the evaporator coil, drill a hole under the glove box, foam it, then
plug
it with a rubber grommet for
next
time to make cleaning a breeze. Where that mystery hole needs to be drilled without going into the coil is the key.

The smell comes from inside the #1 assembly which holds the coil. Maybe instead of drilling a new hole if we can access and unscrew #10 or#11 temp sensors and shooot it in there, but might be difficult to reach b/w firewall and glovebox without a significant amount of disassembly.
General tips if you paid dealer, BMW in this case, to do it for $800:
Close
all air vents.
Put AC mode to Recirc.
