On the 928s I think it was purely high repair costs and that the 928 is simply a less "exciting" car to drive than 911,993,996.

With all that inventory being unloaded at huge discounts, it had to hurt re-sale value on used cars.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I've continued to look for a clean '99 or '00 996 and wondered how much more values might drop. I took a bath on my 928 and really am disappointed with the resale value. Is the 996 likely to continue to drop? Interesting that all the air cooled 911's have seemed to hold value better. It seems to me anything Porsche builds which is water cooled loses value more quickly than anything air cooled. While I don't have any facts to support this theory other than looking at used 993 prices vs. 996's, my perception is that this is true. Where is the bottom and is there any real reason for the drop off in value. On the 928s I think it was purely high repair costs and that the 928 is simply a less "exciting" car to drive than 911,993,996. Where do we go from here on price and are repairs/costs high for you 996 folks? I love the 996 and want to buy one but I would like to avoid the steep drop off in value which may leave me upside down in 2-3 years should I decide to upgrade to 997 etc....any thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Hard to say where prices will end up. I don't think it's an air vs. water cooled thing. I think re-sale values on the 996 have been relatively soft due to the relatively high production vs. the 993. Porsche was very slow to ramp down production when the economy took a downturn, and ended up with a lot of inventory. With all that inventory being unloaded at huge discounts, it had to hurt re-sale value on used cars.

POST 3Original post

I feel your pain. Again, the car is not an investment (that's what I try to believe). As noted production of 996 has been high, hence poor resale. When/if you get one, as they say "drive it like you stole it". If the 997's look that good, be prepared to take a hit. The next Porsche will always be better. How long can you wait?

POST 4Original post

Also... Newer vehicles will have a faster depreciation rate per period than older vehicles having already gone through that period.
