Hey guys, these are questions for my 2.7ltr cayman
Firstly my clutch....the biting point seems very low, when it bites there is still a bit of room left on the way up, could this mean its on its last legs?
Secondly my brakes....sometimes i get the odd little movement to one side when braking, thats fading brake discs right? and i can pretty much touch the floor with the brake pedal, that cant be good?!?!
thanks
Normally in terms of clutch wear and it being on its last legs you'd expect it to be the opposite way to your description (Unless I misunderstood).
A worn clutch would have a high bite point so you would get more travel on the pedal (on the way up) before the clutch would bite.
I always say that you shouldn't worry about your clutch until it's gone, because it doesn't generally damage anything when it is gone and although you can have a high bite point you can still get some serious mileage out of it until it needs replacing.
Brake fade comes from heavy repeat braking normally and the gases produced by the pads under hard braking create a film (if you like) between the pad and the disc that reduces braking efficiency.
If you're concerned about your brakes then go to an empty, flat and wide road or space and at moderate speed slam on the brakes and see if the car pulls up straight. It could be that you uneven braking is simply due to the road conditions rather than anything sinister with the brakes.
Porsche's recommendation is to replace the brake fluid (which is also the clutch fluid) every 2 years, but for hard (any track) driving it has been proven that you need to look at 6 months to 1 year for replacement. A soft pedal can mean various things, such as air in the system, a leaky seal or if it occurs after spirited driving it could be that the fluid simply needs replacing. Brake fluid is hydroscopic and so absorbs water, meaning humidity has an affect over time on the fluid and can cause a soft pedal when driving hard due to the fluid having a lower boiling point.
Depending on when you last had your brake/clutch fluid changed I would suggest you start there and get your dealer to drain, refill and bleed the system and see if that helps. As the brake and clutch systems share the same fluid, replacing the fluid could help with both issues.
With the above in mind maybe you can expand on your description of when the brake issue occurs.
If you are in any doubts with your brakes performance take it to your dealer sooner rather than later!
