Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

My 56 Cayman cut out at 70mph on Motorway on way to Porsche dealer. Lucky I got it on to hardshoulder. There was a rattling noise coming from engine inside and outside so wanted this checked out. Re-started car and it broke down again. Break-down recovery brought it to dealer. really fear the worst! Any previous experiences similar? No engine warning lights either! the car was driving with reduced performance until it cut out! Nightmare!

POST 2Original post

Well what do you expect, your Cayman is 53 years old! J/K :hilarious: How many miles? The rattling inside the engine doesn't sound like a good thing but could be a bad cam lifter/follower. Let us know what the dealer finds!

POST 3Original post

very good. 56 is number plate in uk - i.e. second half of 2006 - Nov 2006 vehicle. please God it aint a case of new engine or something that bad! 2 year warranty is gone so could be pricey. a few vodkas this evening should sorthelp

POST 4Original post

How many miles?, Are you the original owner?.....if indeed it is a new engine (that is a possibility) I would press Porsche to replace at no cost. Many times being a lower mileage car and the original owner go a long way with getting a free or discounted engine.

POST 5Original post

23k they just phoned me and said car wont crank and they cant get to engine. Will cost £1200 before parts, service etc. this cost is to cover 9 hours mechanic taking engine out and apart. im losing the will to live

POST 6Original post

If it is something like an IMS bearing failure you may get Porsche to pick up part of the cost. While on that topic it would be interesting to know if the replacement engine has the larger IMS bearing or not. From what I have read on here LN Engineering has built a viable solution to the IMS failures.

POST 7Original post

Piston went on one of the bank of cylinders. broke into bits and caused engine failure - not very technical but thats it. Engine gone and need replacement. After negotiations Porsche replaced engine with reconditioned one and all parts and labour free. Initial quote £10k! Clutch also gone and few other parts totalling £1.2k which I paid. Couldnt believe Porsche picked up the bill. ok its reconditioned but they are sending me paperwork and guarantee etc! cant be bad to that!

POST 8Original post

Good to see Porsche step up here. Reconditioned has been rumored to be better than stock as more of the engine has been hand build / inspected. It sounds reasonable to me, but not sure if true.
