Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

In front or rear engine cars, it's easy to see how the shifter is attached directly to the transmission. But in mid-engine cars like the Cayman , the engine is smack between the shifter and the transmission. I've never given this much thought before, but now it's bothering me. Can someone tell me how this works?

POST 2Original post

I may be missing what is being asked...but it's just like how it works in the front wheel drive cars -- except the shift cables go back, over the engine, and down to the transmission... there are two cables (which you can see if you look on the screenshots of the articles on how to install the short shifter). I'm definitely not an expert on this, but I don't think there is any major differences. It's still cable driven going to the transmission... You can see the shift cables going over the engine and down in the pictures of clear engine covers. Thx, Ben

POST 3Original post

Even in front or rear engine cars the shifter often has linkage rods and levers or cables running to the gear box. http://yaquina.tfm.com/www.biodieselrabbit.com/Shift-Linkage.jpg http://www.blackhawkengr.com/Deserter GS Build/Shift linkage mid joint.png http://western.net.nz/wheels/mr2/doc/AW11 parts catalogue/Transaxle/lg/shift linkage.GIF

POST 4Original post

I'd assumed that all manual shifters had to have linkage rods that connected to the gearbox. But, bsnively says that that the Cayman has cables that snake around the mid-engine placement. This makes sense, but I didn't know that cables could be used for this purpose. Thanks!

POST 5Original post

A lot of front-wheel-drive cars also use cables for shifting, especially those with transverse engines/trannies. Cables allow much greater flexibility (no pun intended) for connecting the shift lever to the tranny. Unfortunately, you can often feel that extra flexibility (pun intended, this time) in the shifter -- the cables aren't always as precise-feeling as linkage rods/levers.
