hello everyone I am new to the site and new to Porsche. I currently own a Camaro and I am getting into racing, the Camaro which I love is a bit to bulky for the track I am a big muscle guy bit I think it time to part with her. I am going to trade the Camaro in for a Porsche 911. I went this weekend to a Porsche dealer here in Manitoba and tested out a few different models(08 911 c4s manual cabriolet ) and the ( 08 911 c2s coupe auto) they both blew me away with the crazy acceleration/handling and I fell in love with them both. what I took away from the experience is I know I want a coupe and I want manual, I just not sure what model and what year to get the c4s or cs or a turbo, not sure on engine options or what years to stay away from so I thought the best place to ask would be a Porsche forum. My price range is 65k and under. can you guys help me with choosing a good model and year 911 for the track and for cursing around. it will not be a daily driver as I have a truck for that. thanks in advance for the help.
I'm no expert on racing so I'll just make a general comment. The racing guys will chime in I'm sure. Having recent experience looking for cars I think a good place to start would be a 2009 S Coupe. Should be able to find one with <40K miles easily for less than your budget. I'd look at 2009 as the 997 series switched to a new direct injection version (hence you'll see 997.2 talked about). This new engine gets rid for an IMS bearing issue that caused problems for some cars. IMO the S would be the best car to start with, without the complexity and cost of the 4 wheel drive and turbo.
Good luck on your search!
Excellent advice. Although a preferance for MT was stated, for racing I'd opt for a 911 with PDK. You should be able to get a moderate mileage CPO 2009 997S with PDK for the mid $60Ks. If a MT preferance is firm, a 997S in the low $60Ks can be found.
If it were me, a 65k budget for a manual trans 911 track car would lead directly to a GT3. You get the ultra-reliable Mezger engine, plus a chassis that left the factory with track miles in mind. At that price, you should be able to get a low-mile 996 GT3, or a high-mile 997 (assuming you could even find such a thing right now). You might even be able to scoop up a track-prepped car from someone looking to change things up.
Good luck...
Porsches are a lot more expensive here in Canada than in the U.S. A quick search of used 911s on the Porsche Canada site shows the cheapest Carrera S asking price is $52,911 for an 06 with 94,000 km. A 2010 with 50,000 km is $78,000. I doubt the OP will be able to get into a Canadian-sourced 997.2 S for much under $70,000. And with the Canadian dollar so low, shopping in the U.S. isn't going to provide much relief. Sure, there are purchasing options other than a dealer, but as all we local owners know, the pool of Porsches in Canada is pretty small compared to the U.S.
If you are dead set on a 911 I would head over to ********.com. They are a more 911 centric forum. But, if you are willing to explore a Cayman then your best bet is to stay here and read the various information posted.
In either case, if I were you, I would start reading and learning about HPDEs. That is were most will get their initial introduction to driving on a road course track.
Welcome. How serious are you about tracking and eventually racing? If you are really serious and have the funds to support it and since you have a truck, get a trailer and a track/race prepped car. spec miata, 944, spec boxster. Start with DEs and learn to drive. Then consider race school. Also look into what organizations, classes you want to race in as that will guide car selection. If you want to do occassional track (say 10 or so weekends a year) then a street 911 would be great. But be warned- this sport can be adictive. Best of luck.
i still want to be able to drive the car on the road and not just a pure track car.
I am now considering a new, modestly configed base 911 Carrera to use as a daily driver.
Any comments? The MSRPs I have been looking at are in the mid to high 90s.
What is a reasonable discount % off MSRP for a 2014? I am in the West and have noticed a very large inventory across the dealerships.
Would amyone put 19in on these as a daily driver to make them more comfy then the 20s?
