Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I replaced the PCM1+Bose stuff with an Alpine iXA-W407BT plus a lot of other stuff (amps, processor, nav, speakers)

I've seen a few chaps in the boxster forums who have replaced their PCMs.

I bought and used for half a year one of those CDs, before I upgraded.

Integrated Sat Nav (even PCM1) doesn't do that, as the vehicle systems use speed and steering data to continue navigation.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

If you're considering taking out your PCM and replacing it with a more modern sat nav, can you let me know? We're looking for a car for a feature.
Thanks
Phil
I have done that, but I am in Portugal. I replaced the PCM1+Bose stuff with an Alpine iXA-W407BT plus a lot of other stuff (amps, processor, nav, speakers)
I've seen a few chaps in the boxster forums who have replaced their PCMs. These guys have no fear pulling their cars apart!
PM me if you need any links...
Mine is a 996 Turbo....
Come over here to Portugal and take a few shots of my car. I actually subscribed to your e-mag, but i ended up dropping that due to the fact that the provider didn't warn me of when the subscription ended, resulting in just stopping receiving the magazine without noticing that.
thanks, but it needs to be in the UK and still with the original PCM!
Sorry about your experience with the eMag. It's all changed now - we're with another provider.
cheers
Phil
Here's a couple of links to my install, in the previous configuration: I had a Clarion MAX983HD + Alpine PXE-H650, but now I have a full Alpine setup, including a iXA-W407BT, PXA-H100, NVE-M300P.

I have yet to take a few pics of the new install.
I could probably give Becker (Cascade) a few good words but not the PCM as I deliberately chose my car without PCM because:
a) didn't want to look at aged graphics on old discs
b) wanted Bluetooth instead of the SIM tray affair
c) wanted iPod integration
d) wanted voice control
Just a few reasons for not going down the PCM route after my prvious experiences of PCM... but you knew these already I suspect!
Thats interesting about your reasons not for wanting PCM - I'm going through the same mental conversation at the moment.
I'm saving for a 996TT and most of them have PCM of some description but as it will be a fun weekend car for me I can't see me using it very much.
So I'm wondering about resale / desirability etc - obviously cars with PCM are preferred by the masses but for this reason I expect I could get a really nice non-PCM TT for a very good price.
Did you consider resale when you bought yours?
Hi - I didn't really consider the resale implications... just didn't see the point in buying what was essentially one of the first integrated sat navs on the market. Technology and graphics have moved on so much and I felt that the Becker I had in my 964 would be sufficient on the nav front and give me the additional benefits listed above. The only options I had ti have were PSE and tiptronic and Metropole Blue leather... The C4S already comes with memory seats and full leather.
It will be interesting to see what happens to resale values with and without PCM in future: I think the fact that there are no new discs for PCM1 will mean that resale value will not be affected without it - certainly when selling to Porsche experts/enthusiasts.
However, I was swearing at my TomTom at midnight last week in the middle of Brussels... Kept dropping the satellite signal and I got lost umpteen times trying to find the Crowne Plaza through the one-way systems! Integrated Sat Nav (even PCM1) doesn't do that, as the vehicle systems use speed and steering data to continue navigation.
Personally, I wouldn't (and didn't) reject a car without PCM1 - even at the same price.
I have a 2002 996T that came with PCM1 (the 16bit variant). Updated Vauxhall/Opel discs work perfectly with the PCM1 16bit (not the 8bit of 2001 and earlier PCM1s).
I bought and used for half a year one of those CDs, before I upgraded.
These CDs can be had over everywhere: ebay, Vauxhall/Opel dealers, etc.
Having been a fan of satnav since the 90s (and owning several of them), I can say that the PCM1 is still a competent and pretty capable machine: it's fast in calculating routes, accurate, reliable and the screen is pretty good, even visible with a bit of sun. Those Navteq CDs are also nice, in that they (obviously) have the good Navteq database and have the country of your choosing PLUS major roads of Europe. When I brought the car from Kiel down to Lisbon in 2008, I had a 2001 Germany CD that steered me accurately through Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and finally Portugal. It had all the highways and a lot of non-German city-centres.
Had I not wanted better music, iPod, etc, I might have hung to it.
