Try giving Jamie a ring from Nelson Porsche in Stockton on 01642 670766, I've only used him once to deactivate the kiddy seat airbag system on my car and he didn't charge me anything, he spent some time with me chatting about my car and his service prices are approx half that of Tom Ferguson.

Have you checked the fluid level for the gearbox ?

I think the same unit may have been used in the 3.6 and 3.4 but check with your OPC/Indy.

Thanks for that, there is a very slight oil leak and a local indy specialist who replaced the gearbox switchpack did also say that the gearbox had been over filled, could this be causing problems?

Thanks but the car has already been to Tom Ferguson, they replaced the gearbox switchpack which was faulty and diagnostics readout said problem with 2nd gear however they don't do gearbox repairs and suggested going to a specialist.
The car has already been to Tom ferguson, they replaced the gearbox switchpack which Jamie thought was causing the gear slippage as when the car was in park the dash display would also sometimes show reverse.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi, just joined the forum. looking forward to chatting and hope someone can give me a bit of help
I live near Newcastle upon Tyne and own a 1999 911 tiptronic cabrio with 62K on the clock which has developed a gearbox fault (slipping between 2nd & 3rd) which I think is going to require a rebuild.
Can anyone recommend a porsche gearbox specialist in the Nort East as I would like to get it repaired locally if possible
Would be very much appreciated if anyone can help
Thanks
Paul
Welcome to 911uk :bye:
I'm afraid I can't help you with your question, but it might be worth posting the question again in the 996 section, and put say North-East and/or 'tiptronic issue' in the title.
Good luck.
Although they aren't in the North East you could call Mike at Sports & Classic. He is a 996 gearbox expert having specialist experience in rebuilding them. Contact details are in the Service & Repair section.
There was a 996 tip box on ebay last week....replacement might be a better option if yours is shot.
They are usually bomb proof with faults usually being attributed to the tiptronic control unit or leaks/low fluid levels.
I think the same unit may have been used in the 3.6 and 3.4 but check with your OPC/Indy.

This may be useful to but before you do anything get the OPC to hook the car up to the OBD which may flag-up a lesser issue.

You could try Tom Ferguson, a good indy based in Gateshead (0191 4900777) who may well be able to help.
A little further afield, RPM are based in Knaresborough near Harrogate (01423 865602), who did some excellent work on my cam followers.
Good luck

Check for my post some months ago on the rebuild I had on my Tiptronic gearbox. Carvers in Manchester sorted mine out. Let me know if you can't find the post :thumb:

Hi Gary, thanks for that, as it turns out have already spoken to Jamie, he was recommended by two friends of mine who take their 911s there.
The car has already been to Tom ferguson, they replaced the gearbox switchpack which Jamie thought was causing the gear slippage as when the car was in park the dash display would also sometimes show reverse.
The new switchpack solved the gear dispaly problem but not the slippage and the diagnostic readout showed problem with 2nd gear, there is a slight oil leak and I was also told that the gearbox had been overfilled, don't know if this could be causing probs. TFs suggested a gearbox specialist.
Looks like I will end up taking it to Jamie, the only reason I took it to TFs in the first place was I only live a few miles from there and didn't want to risk driving to far
