To all,
I have learned after extensive research, that the navigation drives for the Porsche PCM have two types: those for 2WD card and those for 4WD cars. If you get a 4WD model and put it in a cayman, there will be no error codes. However, your car on the map with jump erratically, causing all sorts of miscalcuations. At first, I thought the gyro in my unit was bad (as the behavior is typical of such a malfunction, and after disassembly, or nav drives DO have a gyro/accelerometer sensor)
If you buy a used unit, be sure its from a 2WD car! Not from a carrera 4S, Cayenne, or Turbo. I learned my lesson the $$$hard$$$ way. Be sure to ask on eBay or wherever the type of car it came out of. The casings are identical, and porsche has so many damn part #s.
I addition, if you get a DVD drive with disk and the disk is a pre 2006 generation DVD, it will cause your PCM to shut down with "Overheat Protection" warning. Its not overheating, its an error of running too old a disk in the car.
Yep you always want to check the part #'s.
Problem is there are a variety of part numbers!
I need a good parts CD for this car..
Yes there is a TSB issued on this - 0511/9112, dated 6/22/05. Press MAIN and TRIP buttons at the same time and you will find the software versions of all the components discovered on the ring.
PCM's going up to version 2.1 accepts the last DVD dated 10/2004 (also known as Model Level A). PCM's at version 3, 3.1 and beyond (basically cars built from 04.2005 onwards) should use DVD's dated 04/2005 and thereafter.

RichP thanks for posting the warning. I had never heard of that peculiarity.

Another reason to buy from a Porsche Dealer.
i think to clarify the OP's comments... i'll list some part numbers here. hopefully nobody else will make the same mistake i did. if either are swapped, you will have erratic GPS icon on your screen.
997.642.157.01 - are for 2 wheel drive cars (horizontal mounted navigation module DVD drives)
997.642.159.01 - are for 4 wheel drive cars (4S, turbos, GT3's for vertically mounted navigation module DVD drives)
The units main difference is the gyro's are mounted in a different orientation for the 2wd and 4wd cars. I also have a 4wd dvd nav unit and I opened it up to see if was an modular component that could be reorientated as I assume the units are identical apart from this feature, but decided against pulling things off the mainboard randomly as caution is sometimes the better part of valor.
G.
yeah, thats what i thought too. i recall that other mfg had some eternal switch where you can set the vertical or horizontal position which adjusts the dampening, but not woth porsches.
also.. im sure these has already been noted somewhere but.. i'll put it here since its related to the navigation.
PCM2.1 - part#
997.642.143.xx
(Digtial sound output only. these will only ouput sound via throught the MOST outputs) the analog outputs from pos2 cable will not produce any sound. these PCM are programmed from Becker and cant be changed.
PCM2.1 - part#
997.642.141.xx
(Analog sound output from plug #2) this will ouput analog sound which will also work with sound package plus (ASK amplier). im not sure if the MOST cables will also work for sound.
Hi Daytonaviolet,
Do you have the Part numbers for the PCM 3.0 head units for a Cayman S 09 with BOSE?
Cheers,
Warder.
So if you mounted the DVD unit vertically then it would function correctly?
Very interesting. I have done the PCM retrofit and seen what is described above. I plan to check the PN from the drive unit later.
