I only have experience of the dry sump and it is when the car is at operating temp and running (it wont measure it unless these criteria are met).

How does this gauge work and is it worth paying attention to so should you just use the dipstick, I assume you dip when cold on a level service with the engine not running unlike some of the older models.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi Can anyone explain to me how the oil level indicator work, I viewed a car today after a lengthy run it seemed to say the oil level was low. How does this gauge work and is it worth paying attention to so should you just use the dipstick, I assume you dip when cold on a level service with the engine not running unlike some of the older models. Thanks in advance for any help

POST 2Original post

What model? Reason I ask is I think the procedure differs between the wet and dry sump models. I only have experience of the dry sump and it is when the car is at operating temp and running (it wont measure it unless these criteria are met). Forgive me for stating the obvious but make sure the car is on level ground.

Model The car was a 2000 3.4 C2 996 Thanks

POST 4Original post

What gez said... I got really worried about my 3.6 996 when it appeared that the oil was flooding away. Each time I went to the car I got a really different reading. However, the spot where I park the car isn't *quite* level, there's a slight slope, and it totally misreads. After parking the car on a more level spot I get an accurate reading and there's really nothing to worry about. I was also advised that the gauge isn't really to be totally trusted as many different factors can have an affect on the reading. One of which being whether the car was just run or not. All I'm saying is don't panic! Of course before buying I'd definitely get a PPI, and I'd still mention this concern to whoever was performing the PPI just so they can double check.

POST 5Original post

Wet or Dry sump needs to be measured when upto operating temp on a 996, the difference being on a N/A (wet sump) car its best to measure after about 5 mins on both guage and dipstick with engine off whilst on a F/I (dry sump) car its gauge only with engine running and is pretty accurate immediateley
