Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

1 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All I've just joined as a member and have a question somebody might be able to help with please. I own a 2002 996 C4s auto tiptronic and have recently experienced blue smoke coming from the exhaust on start-up and then streaming out whilst driving. I took it into my local Porsche specialist (which was recomended to me by a number of people) who advised that the oil separator filter needed replacing. They had it two weeks and this work was apparently completed. Now for the problem..... It still throws out blue smoke on start up but not whilst driving and now the oil failure light comes on? I initially thought there might be a bit of oil residue left in the exhaust so drove it 50 miles to clear but it still happens. Obviously, I will take it back to the specialist on Monday but was wondering what it could possible indicate in the meantime? They charged for 32 hours labour to change the separator filter and am puzzled as to why it's still not right. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

POST 2Original post

A small puff of blue smoke on start up is normal, its completely random though depends how the engine settles after switching off.

POST 3Original post

32 hours???? do you mean 3.2 hours ? if not i would wince at that bill. The oil/air seperator does go on them sometimes, so at least you can cross that off the list, good luck anyway, sorry i cant be of any more help.

Hi, do a search on here using "blue AND smoke"... Loads of info, definitely take it back to the Indy though. Good luck... :thumb:

POST 5Original post

Hi, To do an oil to air seperator on a 996 tiptronic car you need to remove the engine and do the work, 10 hours give or take..... not 32 ! but hey nice work if you can get it. Mike

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All I have been in discussions with my local Porsche Specialists who advise me that it did not take 32 hours to complete the work but 8 (they bill for quarter of an hour slots so my mistake).
