While belt is off bend it and check for splits, if so then replace - you can get decent ones like Continental or Gates (both OEM) from most motor factors, let me know your postcode I will point you in best direction to closest one.

Hi I have noticed a very slight rumble/rattle from the engine compartment, especially noticeable this morning when it was particularly cold. I think the rattle may be comming from the front of the alternator, I have been told it may be a VW part [clutch thingy] which can be ordered from Eurocarparts, anyone done this job? I did try to 'search' Alternator Rattle - but just got loads of rubbish search results, what may i be doing incorrectly there then?? :?: Cheers Paul C4S, with Litronic lights, 2002/3 model.

Quickest and most acurate way of finding the issue would be remove the aux belt (take photo of belt route before hand to aid refitting) Then you can check all of the pulleys for play. While belt is off bend it and check for splits, if so then replace - you can get decent ones like Continental or Gates (both OEM) from most motor factors, let me know your postcode I will point you in best direction to closest one. :thumb:

Clutch on front of Alternator ? Thanks Lloyd, I will try that.... I think it may be the clutch :dont know: on the front of the alternator, one of the guys here has a Golf GTI which looks very similar and his locked up, had to have it removed at a VW place but did the rest himself. old trick.....spray some water onto the belt if the noise goes away you probably have your answer(which is nothing to worry about). Squeaky belts are very common on watercooled 911's.
