Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Most of you now know my 996 is going in the next day or so to be replaced by a Boxster S.
Well... just called my
car insurance
company up to inform them of the change.
Informed them of what is happening and awaiting the price drop.... NOPE, it has gone up by 25%!!!!
Here is how the convo went:
Me: Erm, I don't understand, I was expecting a decrease? I mean, I have at the moment a 911 insured with you, I am moving to a car of the same year but less powerful & half the value.
Mr Insurance: The Boxster is more desirable than the 911 :?
Me: WTF? Ok, you work in C A R insuance don't you?
Mr Insurance: Yes
Me: But clearly you know naff all about cars
Mr Insurance: Not sure what to say
Me: Can I ask a question please?
Mr Insurance: Yep
Me: If a buy a Ferrari 360 Spider will I get a cheaper quote?
Mr Insurance: huh?
Me: (THINKS <God help me... I have insured my car with the muppets!>) ok.. forget it
Mr Insurance: Oh ok...
Me: I think it is best I cancel the policy and go elsewhere, you clearly have an issue with the Boxster
Mr Insurance: Sorry to hear that. Anything else I can help with, we do a fantastic deal on hous.....
Me: I will stop you there... good bye!
So... sell your 996, the Boxster is more desirable!

Before I got my current Boxster S I was also considering a facelift 996 and when doing
insurance
comparisions I found the Boxster was the more expensive of the two to insure.
It's just down to the risk for the insurance company and it suggests there are more/higher claims made for Boxsters than 996's.
Mee too, Boxster S more than a 996.????????????????????????? I was expecting an increase, but got a decrease when I changed to 996.
Simple has to be the soft top on Boxster? No my 996 was a cab! 996 was worth 1/3 rd more too.
Lies, damned lies and statistics.
I think it's actually quite possible that insurance companies statistics would suggest that a Boxster is a higher risk for them than a 911.
In theory you start with a base figure and apply the +/- for risk factors and therefore same conditions for a cheaper car should result in cheaper insurance.
The problem lies with the impossibility of digging out the conditional data from the base quote. Um. ***** - how to explain this...
Start with a BASE figure that you then modify by such things as...
- No claims
- Age
- Off street / garage parking
- Postcode and related car crime
- Expected milage
To get a final individual quote.
Problem is, especially with relatively small volume vehicles with low amount of data, the base quote data will be polluted by some of the conditions that are then applied.
Essentially if 80% of 911s are off road or garaged, in low crime commuter belt as opposed to city centres, driven by older and more experienced drivers who are less likely to prang, are mostly low milage etc then it's almost impossible to try and normalise the base data to shat it should be without the conditions before applying the conditions.
Boxster - younger drivers, higher milage, more on street parking in urban areas (in comparison), higher numbers so more data points.
Numbers. Slippery things. Never trust them.
911 GT2 insurance was just £148.50/yr more than our prev Boxster-S
I think it's because the Boxster-S was a ragtop and/or insurance companies don't like them.
BTW - renewals and car changes are an excuse for them to empty your pockets during 2010
Last year I bought an old Peugeot Van 106 d for £900 just for ferrying the dogs and stuff around, insurance company quoted me £100 more to insure it than my 997S! :?:
Eventually insured it for £150 third party fire and theft, 2 months later a lorry killed it! Insurance paid out £500 after paying for me to drive around in a brand new hire van for 3 months while they decided what to do!
The insurance industry is very odd!
Agreed. I'm sure they run two books
Book one - cheap quotes for new customers shopping around for the best deal.
Book two - extortion of existing customers who have already made the change and are therefore stuck with the price offered, or face cancellation charges and possibly being stuck uninsured if they dont accept the new price.
I guarantee you, if you limped into Kwikfit with a flat tyre you would not get the 'best deal' price when phoning up in advance.
yes: sure its the statistics of claims rather than perceived desirability which is making the boxster more expensive to insure :frustrated:
reading the phone transcript I'm sure i've had very similar calls to donkey-brained insurance phone operators...
you know the answer now don't you - you will have to chop in the boxster against a gt2 if thats cheaper to insure - you can't go wrong!
I was phoning round for (motor) bike insurance last year at renewal time and it was obvious they were just reading from a set of questions - the clues started when they asked "petrol or diesel?" but became a definite when asked "how many doors?"!
Now with EBike.
Get your head around this:
Just done an insurance comparison quote... filled in all the details and got a decent quote of £358
Then out of interest I change just the car over to the 911 but the rest of the info exactly the same... quote - £418
Heres the thing. . . both of the above quotes are from the company I am with!!!!
So, as a new customer it is £60 less but for an existing customer it is nearly a £100 more!
Things that happen in this world really get me.. they are getting away with steeling the way I see it.
Lets get on the phone for a moan...
Supply and demand old chap! Same reason you can fly from Paris to New York via London for less than you can fly from London to New York.
If you looking for the sense in it you'll go mad. Just exploit it instead and change insurance company every renewal. (And bank account, and mortgage, and electricty, and phone supplier, actually good god it is pretty tedious isn't it!)
