Anybody have any good thoughts on a better stereo replacement that fits snug as a bug into the cayman.
There has been lots of discussion in this subforum on the topic, just search. The Pioneer AVIC line is a favorite. I will be personally installing the D3 shortly.
I've searched through the forums and found nothing so far...i would like a recommendation on just the basic stereo...no nav just a radio/cd mp3 player. I just want to remove the head unit and replace it and replace the spearkers with something better then what porsche offers. PI don't want to clutter up my dash with the Pioneer AVIC system since I will never use it.
This is really difficult to do because the design trend with in-dash aftermarket stereos lately has been tons of buttons, which leads to a busy and complicated interface. Also you ideally want a double-din unit, so that you don't have one of those left-over storage slots that I think look bad. I'm partial to Pioneer Premier receivers, but Alpine ones are very nice too (but more buttons).
This is a good unit,
Pioneer FH-P800BT
. It should be out any day now, other models with the same design but a few less features are available now.
But honestly, if you're not concerned with more features like bluetooth, mp3 player, etc, just better sound... I highly suggest keeping the factory head-unit and separately tweaking the amplification and speakers.

suneet, thanks for the great advice....the pioneer is very nice looking but as you said I'll probably go the route of tweeking just the sound with better speakers and better amps.
again thanks
Was there a particular function you were looking for by replacing the head unit?
Otherwise, stick with the speaker / amp replacement. A high end audio shop will be able to do it without taking away from the stock look. Below are a few pictures of my setup.
-Door speakers have been replaces by Morel separates
-Dash speakers are unplugged
-8" JBL driver in trunk with custom enclosure
-Boston Acoustic gt50 amp in front boot.
-Stock PCM remains
Dan,
I've got to say, that is a seriously good looking installation. You must be proud of it.
Thanks Mankey. I wish I could take credit for doing it myself, but that's not the case. I like that it looks stock. *It sounds pretty good too!
just better sound...love your setup Dan...love the look of keeping it stock...this is the way I'm going to go...now I just need to find a shop that will do it right....okay first I'll need my car which cannot get here soon enough - completion date march 20. I'm just getting my ducks all in a row first.
Thanks Saucerman.
I'm sure if you post your location someone here can point you in the right direction for a quality shop.

so If any one knows of a good shop around my area please yell it out.
