Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have found hardwire kits for the ealier Nuvi's but not the 760. Has anyone found something that will work. Any help is much appreciate. TIA.

POST 2Original post

I've done my Nuvi 750... easiest (and cheapest) way is to go to Radio Shack and buy a 12v splitter. You need it because the Garmin plug is 5v and the car is 12v. The power converter is in the plug for the Garmin. RadioShack.com - Power & Batteries: Car power: DC (12V/Car) adapters: 12VDC 2-Outlet Car Power Y-Adapter So once you have that, open up your fuse box and tap one of the switched fuses. Cut the input end of the y-splitter and wire the hot lead to the fuse, the other to the ground by the fuse box. Take the other two output ends of the splitter and stuff em to the left of the fuse box, they fit pretty snug. I actually cut one off since I only needed one power port down there but you could keep two and plug a radar detector into it or something. Plug the Garmin into one of them. I have my Garmin mounted to the left of the steering wheel, using the friction mount and wire coming out of the fuse box is completely hidden under the weather stripping.

Suneet, You are always coming through! Thanks for the reply. This method keeps the traffic function working to I assume?

POST 4Original post

Slightly off topic.....but not really: I just purchased a Nuvi 760 so I could take it with me to Italy. WOW! This thing rocked. I just got back, so I have not had time to read the owners manual, but when I did flip through it, the manual seemed to be sparse and not a lot of detail. I love this thing.....it really is quiet nice for the price and portable too....so I can put into my wifes car....or anyone else's for that matter. Believe it or not, when I was in Italy, I took it on one of my morning runs, just for it to track my distance and time. People kept looking at me weird because I was holding this thing in my hand while running. I bet they thought I had just robbed some old lady's purse! LOL Anyway.....that leads me to a question. My runs were quite dramatic in terms of elevation change. I tried to find the altitude but could not find that reading anywhere on the 760. Anyone know where I should be looking? My BMW 330i (04) had this function, but I am not sure all GPS navigation devices do as well. It is not a must have, but it has me wondering now. Thanks!

POST 5Original post

Kevin here is a nice forum for all things Garmin GpsPasSion Forums - Garmin nüvi forums

POST 6Original post

Kevin, I believe to get the elevation you just have to tap where the signal bars are in the upper left hand corner of the map screen. If you tap it, it should take you to elevation and satellite signal strength etc.

POST 7Original post

Yes everything works fine with the method , the Garmin acts exactly like it does if it were plugged into another 12v socket; except it's switched power so the unit turns on with the car and when the car is switched off it gives you 15 seconds to keep it on using the internal battery otherwise it will shut off or you can immediately shut it off.

POST 8Original post

I have my Nuvi 760 (and previously, a Nuvi 350 and Nuvi 750) hardwired in my CS. In addition to what suneet mentioned, I recommend you use one of these to tap the fuse box: It's called a 'Littelfuse ATO Add-A-Circuit', and all you do is pull out the fuse whose socket you want to tap, plug that fuse into the Add-A-Circuit, and plug it into the socket. Now you've got a 12V line you can wire to your socket, or split to hardwire multiple devices. You also get the added benefit of a fuse-protected circuit (see the second fuse on the device?) for the devices on the tapped line. The Add-A-Circuit is also high enough that it clears neighboring fuses, and low enough that the fuse box cover still closes. I've got 2 of them in my CS fuse box right now. You can find these at your local PepBoys.

POST 9Original post

Thanks Interpol. Somehow I've never seen those taps despite much time loitering in auto and hardware stores.

POST 10Original post

I use the generic radio shack fuse taps: RadioShack.com - Cables, Parts & Connectors: Fuses: Fuse holders & taps: Fuse Taps (4-Pack) Along with some male/female wiring disconnects. Just make sure you splice the bottom of the fuse which is the business end, keeps things fused.

+1 on that observation. We have a lower end 200w, which we use on rare occasions. I was stunned one evening driving to ABQ from Los Alamos when I inadvertently touched the display, and a summary screen appeared with time, distance, speed, average speed....great stuff but I never knew it was there. It was fun using it on the round trip to Parade to keep track of all that stuff. Brian
