The original surround will be filled with fiberglass, sanded and resurfaced with a slightly darker silver (and same finish to match the lower AC surround).

However, I believe my installer used a double DIN cage from another radio that did the job.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok, I did it or……. about to do it. Tomorrow morning, I’m scheduled for a head replacement. Replacing the lousy German excuse for a standard radio (Pecker) for the latest technology from Tokyo, a Pioneer AVIC-D3 Nav/CD/DVD/IPod/Bluetooth/PDA/Backupcam. (it even gets satellite ;-)
Pictures will be taken, reports will be given. Here is my punch-down and notes from taken all of you fantastic resources (Suneet, TresX KMan S and others).
Any other thoughts? I’m open for suggestions..

Good luck. Count all your sponges and forceps when you are done and be sure to post pix. Even though I have no plans of ever doing this mod, I find these threads very interesting. I don't think I would have the courage to have such surgery performed but applaud those that do.
Not Bose (see ref. to CDR/24). Spoke to the surgeon and learned that the surround for the original radio has a slight curve and beveled edges that can't be duplicated with stock plastic. So, I gave the go ahead to kill the CDR/24 in order to salvage the surround. The original surround will be filled with fiberglass, sanded and resurfaced with a slightly darker silver (and same finish to match the lower AC surround). I thought of going with alumi-look but felt it would be too much contrast with the black frame of the D3. I'm hoping a darker silver than the original will make for a better cosmetic fit with the D3.

You know, the author of this post....
might have an issue with your banner. I on the other hand was gonna jumb all over this post, until it was independently decided that it was too easy

TresX, that post is kind of what inspired me to put the picture in my signature and reminded me that I had it. Not that I hate Saturns, but that bumper sticker was on an '88 Civic Hatchback lol.
Out of the hospital and back on the road. Results; the Bionic Cayman! Ipod-Navigation-Radio-DVD = Information Overload. WARNING: Do not attempt to drive Cayman with D3 on. Period! Final reslulting effect: Cayman with Lexus brain. I hope to report more after I figure out how I want to use this thing. Going to the NY Autoshow tonight for maiden voyage with son at the wheel and me in the passenger seat with D3 and users manual. Should be a great night out in NYC!
Here are some pics:
Enjoy...

Hi Stevie, I live in the NY area. Do you mind telling us who installed the unit for you? They made the surround from the face plate of the original unit? They did a great job! Thanks, Frank
Hi great info on your self install. Im just in the proccess of doing the same thing but on a 2006 boxster. Question The AVIC standard double din that fits in were the CDR24 came out of is a sloppy fit? did you have some kind of fitting kit to make it a snug fit or was it a DIY job just make up spacer brakets to hold it in place and bend back the tabs for extra security, if you happen to have a pic or 2 of just the double din being installed it might give me a clue as to how to fully secure it in place.
Im going for the black piano gloss fascia and im going to have a go at CNC milling it up my self as I cant wait weeks for a jap kit, and it cost to much for what it is, thanks anyways mike
mike424u- After re-reading my thread I can see how you thought that I did it myself, when in-fact I did not. Sorry for that. However, I believe my installer used a double DIN cage from another radio that did the job. If you look carefully you can see the silver steel cage around the D3 in two of the mounted photos above. That’s all I’ve got. The glossy black fascia should look great matching with the D3. Will you gloss black the climate fascia as well? I found a great match automotive spray paint for the OEM Volcano if you’re interested, just let me know.

Wow, stevie; that looks the bomb!!!
on a related note; related anyway to what you just asked mike: how much of a pita would it be to remove the fascia of the center stack components and have them done in gloss black, like you can have done from the factory (but if you didn't have the luxury of ordering the car built to spec with that option)? aside from the painting and making it come out nice and proper, is the removal from the car, and particularly then the removal of the faces from the units themselves, a serious hassle or is it pretty straightforward?
vixapphire- As far as we know so far, there is no way to remove the facia from the CRD-24 without destroying the Becker head unit. I'm not sure about the climate control facia.
I'm not clear on your reference on the factory gloss black?? Only the AVIC-D3 comes with gloss black parts out of the box. I'm certain the buttons can be masked but you need to go into a dust free paint room to get the gloss perfect.
