Hi all, Wondering if any of you have any experience with this. I just picked up a 99 996 and I am having a problem with either the ignition switch and/or the starter motor. When I turn the key to start it, it starts up fine, but especially when it is cold, it sounds like the starter motor isn't disengaging from the flywheel. When it starts and I let go of the key, the switch seems a little lazy in returning to the normally on position ... as if the spring was a little tired. At first I thought this was the sole problem, but now I'm not so sure since even if I help the spring get back out of the start position, I think the motor is still staying engaged. Maybe because it was damaged earlier?? Anyone with any info? Also, I do a lot of work on my 01-996 and plan to do even more on the 99. So I'm wondering if the shop manuals are worth the money. Thanks everyone!

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

indicative with the switch it will just get worse help it go back after you start it!!! Get it fixed or be better about helping it when you start it in the meantime. If you don't take care of it sooner than later it will just keep getting worse and worse and then it will be like mine is now where it is hard as all hell to remove the key let alone turn it and put it back after starting the car becuase the springs or whatever that do that are dead!
I just purchased a set of 6 CDs for the Porsche 996 workshop from ebay. They cost me 30!. I can't tell you what they are like as I haven't got them yet. I am sceptical but for 30 quid it's worth a try. Here is another one for sale. I can't wait to see these, there seems to be quite a few on ebay if you search "Porsche CD" http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=42607&item=2419477429
Be careful with CDs. PAG doesn't provide the workshop manuals on CD, so these must be made by a third party. I've heard that some people buy the manuals and scan them, but that would be a pretty time consuming task. So be careful that you are getting a full set. There are 10 manual groups but some of the groups have 2-4 manuals each, so I think the total is around 15. Also find out what supplement level the CD is at. PAG issues almost monthly updates to the manuals. I think they are currently at supplement #75. If you have an older car, this isn't a big deal, since most of the supplements are for newer models or model years. But I think for a 2000 model you'll want to make sure they at least are up to supplement #40 or so. Once you have the manuals on CD, it will be difficult to update the supplements, since they only come in paper form. Karl
Thanks for the info on the Manuals. Sean, I do plan on fixing this ASAP, just trying to figure out the best aproach. Guess I'll take it to the dealer since I don't have the manuals yet and can't find any DIY's on this.
