After search more questions regarding Dension
I just ordered one from Bumperplugs. I need confirmation. I could have miss the answers. but bare with me.
Please confirm:
I can control the ipod from the ipod as well as from the CDR24
I can play mp3's from a USB device
I can install the unit behind the unit
The Fiber optic wire coming from the dension is a direct plug to the back of the CDR24?
I can tap power from the fuse box (always on means constant power even if the car is not running and the ignition is off)
Does it display song info in the instruments?
I guess I will be installing this by myself. I have always successfully install projects like this successfully but I always have this doubt and fear when doing it specially on a baby like this.
I called on Jamie but I could not afford to pay 600 for install and also the guy at Burbank is around 400 also.
Thank you!
I can answer some, but whether your car has
Bose
or not is a big factor in the wiring.
You can control the ipod from the ipod
The CDR-24 supports NO text whatsoever
If you have done radio installs and worked on a car before, cayman is no different
You will need your car programmed by the dealer for a "CD-Changer"
Thank's, I do have
Bose
, sorry for not being specific. I took a peak up front and I realize that the amp is located below. hmmm!
Anyone who had installed the Dension and you have a
CDR24
with
bose
and installed it behind the radio, what should I be aware of.
I have
bose
and had
CDR24
when I installed my Dension. I installed mine in the front boot where the cd changer would normally be. I tapped off of the cd changer wires to power my Dension. Installing behind the radio shouldn't be that difficult, but putting it in the boot made much more sense to me. I don't have any particular advice, but I'd be happy to answer any specific questions that you may have. Given that I have done it already, it would probably only take an hour or two to do again.
I installed the Dension unit behind the headunit with no issues, plenty of room, just be careful getting the cables folded in when you put the headunit back in (you can't bend fiber at too sharp of an angle). You can get constant power from the fusebox, look at my Ipod in center console article to get specific fuse details, I think it was from the CD changer fuse.
I will appreciate all the help. Should I have the dealer turn on the Changer capability now or wait until I am finish with the install?
It depends on how much they will charge you now vs how much they will charge you later... if they're gonna do it for free now because perhaps they can roll it into the deal or they need to hook the car up to the system for the initial PDI, then why not do it now.
If they want to charge you for the extra labor (30 min. is what my dealer charges), then you might as well wait till afterwards. I suggest talking to your dealer about it and seeing if they are even willing to program it beforehand.

I had my car programed for CD Changer. they say they did it but I did not notice anything different in my
CDR24
. Should there be any indication?
The indication would be that when you push CD, it will say CDC. If you push it again, it will say CDS. It should toggle back and forth. If you don't get anything, try flipping the switch on/off three times to reset the Dension. I also find that my car occasionally needs to sit for a minute or two after doing it before it registers.
Well, The Dension is not in yet. So maybe I have to install it first before I see the CDC option. I will be doing this project over the weekend. Anyway, as I understand it, the fiber optic connection from the dension goes directly behind the radio, correct? and this applies with the
bose system
with no CDC.
Does anyone have a diagram or pictures on how the GW500 installs on a Porsche Cayman with
CDR24
and
Bose
no CDC. I want to run it behind the radio unit. Is there an optical wire going in the CRD24 that I need to unplug and loop the Optical wire coming from the dension to it?
I don't have a diagram or picture, but there is a fiber optic cable that connects to the
CDR24
. Check the
PCM
installation article in articles section to see how to remove
CDR24
and some pictures.
I practically looked at every article but nothing specific with the
CDR24
with
Bose
. So I am a little concerned. What I want to understand is, do I uninstall that optic cable from the back of the
CDR24
and directly replace it with the one coming from the dension or do I need to create like a series or loop from dension to CDR to Amp? Thank you.
Also, how do I program the Dension so I can control the Ipod unit directly. Do I just push CD6 and I can control it on the Ipod.
(stressing /anxious)
Yes, you need to disconnect one of the fiber optic cable from the back of the
CDR24
. The signal goes like
CDR24
->Dension->Amp.
I'm not sure which fiber optic cable you need to remove from stock fiber optic connector(I installed mine in the trunk), but from my understanding, you need to remove the fiber optic cable that sends signal out from
CDR24
to amp.(one that doesn't light up)
Put that fiber optic cable into supplied fiber optic housing(dension) and put supplied fiber optic cable(dension kit) into same housing. Make sure you put every fiber optic cables into correct direction(arrow and light). Put the housing into Tyco connector and plug connector into Dension unit. Now you will need to connect the other end of supplied fiber(Dension) to somewhere. Put that fiber optic cable into stock fiber optic connector that was plugged into CDR 24.
Here is installation guide from dension.

Pointnshoot and Pathan, thank you for your help. As I understand from what you guys are telling me, this is how it should go in the diagram I created.
Thank you again!
Correct!!
the gateway 500 can go into the fiber chain anywhere, but if you're going to have it in the cabin, then yes, you will connect it to the back of the radio. _ Suneet
That diagram is not correct. The Dension may patch in between the HU and the amp, but the Dension signal goes to the HU for processing (equalization, volume, etc.), then to the amp.
I don't know about dension sending signal back to HU for processing, but I think that diagram is correct for installation guide diagram.
Well, I started at 6pm and I just finished my install, 3 hours but that is including dinner and family time. The good news is, I got it installed and it is working. the not so good news is I did not get to install behind the radio. I started taking the steps to ge the radio out but I could not go any further and get through the weired four metal notches where you have to turn it 90º. I just could not get to the upper two allen screws, so I gave up that route. I remembered the amp was located in front of the cabin and I found the optical cables and followed my diagram and tap power to the main battery and put the ground on the negative side. Is my power source a bad setup? should I put a fuse in between? Anyway, I wish I could set up my Ipod in the front console. I guess I will need to find out how to lead the cable from the front bin to the console and find a way to extend the ipod cable. Any one knows what cable I need to get and the route to get in the front area?
You definitely need to fuse everything you build in a car. In this case you can use the fuse of the audio system.
Ok, you can control the volume on the HU, but then only a control message goes to the amplifier which actually processes the signal.
I'm confused, so is the diagram I made above I followed the right way or not?
What amp fuse do I need? 10 amp?
It's ok, this way.
Also it would be ok, if you connect it in the other way.
The audio signal (which travels through the ring in an own container) will reach the amplifier, no matter what is the order of the devices.
I just said than on a MOST system it's not likely, that a device puts something on the ring, and an other device modifies that and puts it back. So e.g. in case of volume control, the HU just instructs the amplifier to modify its analog output, but the digital data on the whole ring remains unchanged.
The power consumption of GW500 is between 0.0025 and 1.5 Amper. You can share the fuse with the audio system.
GW500 thank you for being patient. So with my current setup
HU ----- Dension ----- AMP -----then back to HU, the EQ on the ipod is not functioning?
But If I go Amp --- Dension ---- HU ---- back to Amp. The HU will recognize the EQ function of the ipod.
Or it does not matter.
Have you read this article?
http://www.planet-9.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=103
Explains the install perfectly.
I removed a CDC and replaced it with GW500. Works perfectly.
One side note.... if you do NOT have a CDC installed stock you will have to get the porsche dealer to enable the CDC on the MOST bus.
The iPod's EQ function is done inside the iPod, and I guess it cannot be controlled through the HU.
The HU can only control the EQ function of the AMP, and - similarly to volume controls - it will work with both setups.
If you installed dension in front trunk, why don't you just tap the power to CDC cables?
That is where I tapped my Dension unit to and didn't have any problem with it.
Check the link that hollywood provided in his thread.
Well, I did not find the CDC cables because I was having trouble taking the plastic cases out. But I will try it again later. Do you know what type of cable pin I should get to extend the ipod cable. I know bumperplugs sells tehm but I am hoping I can cruise over to the local electronic store and find that cable...
Well i did clean up my work by moving the Dension unit where the CD changer is suppose to reside. I did not realize that there is an extra optical cable and adapter so I can extend the optical cable. I also tap my power supply to the Red/green wire for positive and brown wire for negative. Like Kman S article. but I use wire taps from pep boys to make it easier and avoid soldering. Anyway, I will order the extension cable from bumperplugs and relocate the Ipod inside. hopefully it won't be to hard find the path through the firewalls. Thank you for all your help.
Hi everyone! I'm back. Is the dension suppose to power off the ipod when you turn off the car, take the keys out and lock the car? or when I tun the radio on without turning the car on, will it turn off the ipod after I turn the radio back off and lock the car? I am asking because I notice yesterday that my ipod lost charge. Just now, I waited for a good 5 minutes after I locked the car and the ipod never turned off. What is it suppose to do after you turn off the car?
Yes, that is a cool way to attach the ipod but I am going with the Kuda route. I like it because it is facing me and it still looks OEM because it has the same leather as our interior. I was already able to bring the ipod and AUX cable upfront and it was easier than expected. I found a free opening that had a thin grommet right by where Kman S routed his just on top of the clutch. I was surprise to find it because Kman S had to drill a hole because he used the one where all the wiring are routed. I wonder if this is something the 06 did not have or maybe because I have AT versus the manual.
Have you installed our kuda base yet? I just got mine. Not quite sure how to do it. It talks about the removing the cover around the gear shifter - is there an easy way to do that?
Kuda install, harder on a tiptronic.
yes, I have installed mine and it looks good. Unfortunately, the install was not as easy as I hope it would be. Took me two hours in the dark including figuring out how to make it work!
My issue is I have a Tiptronic and taking out the plastic around it was not as easy as in a manual. The instruction is for a manual. And there is no way of putting the Kuda in without taking out that piece unless you do some modification like I did.
What tranny do you have?
Anyway, I had to pull the right panel out per the articles in the forum, as well as loosen the plastic piece sorrounding the tranny by unsnapping it starting from the end. I also ended up trimming some parts of the metal fins both pieces. (the one that goes in-between the radio and right panel just so it will go in completely). It was a bit frustrating since my thinking was it would be easy to install it plus night time caught me making it more difficult to work.
I made up a modified instruction, but use it on your own risk and good luck. Hopefully you won't have to go through what I had to go through.
I already told Kuda USA about it and they were accomodating, even forwarded my Email to Germany but the response was nowhere close to making the isntructions better.
Thanks for the quick response. I have manual transmission.
So I guess after removing the side panel I should be able to pop off the entire covering - i.e. top and bottom?
Tried to find something on the forum with regards to that, but couldn't.
When you said trimming the fins - you just made them shorter, or also narrower.
Definitely painful. I even tried to find more info on the German site - nothing!
I installed a Dension GW500 this weekend just as izzykman did, complete all the way down to getting power from the same taps and “inserting” the GW500 in the same point on the Fiber Optic MOST bus (between the HU and the AMP see his drawing on the first page of this thread). Today I had my local dealer program the car to think it has a CDChanger installed. The problem is that when I push the CD button on the
CDR24
it ONLY goes to CDS. I believe the GW500 is powered correctly because I was able to update the Firmware to 2.08 as shown on the iPod screen.
I have tried several things so far:
Restarting the GW500 via the reset button on top of the Aux input.
Switching the mode selector to either bypass or CD Changer.
Disconnecting the GW500 from the Fiber Bus until the light goes out.
After each of these steps I locked the car and let it sit for between 15 minutes and 1.5 hours, double checked that the bypass switch was in the down position then started the car. Still no joy.
I talked with my service rep this afternoon and he said that the tech changed the setting for CD Changer from “Not installed” to “installed”. He invited me back later today to play with it together to see if we can figure it out.
Any recommendations?
Does anyone know exactly what settings need to change on
PWIS
(sp?)?
Thanks for the help, with out Cayman Club.net I do not think this install would be possible!
