Ive just fitted an avic 900 into mine, I dont have cup holders but it left about a 12mm gap at the top of the trim, so I think youll be a perfect fit with cupholders.

I'm keeping an eye on ebay for a decent unit that's clean (very few buttons and branding) and offers connection to my iPhone/iPod.

The good news is that CDR22 is a normal wired radio, not MOST, so changing should be simpler.

Sorry for going over old ground again regarding audio upgrades but for us non technical minded it all seems a bit of a nightmare.
Firstly, my car is a 2002 model year Turbo (registered oct 2001). It has the CDR22 head unit (the one with the cassette behind the front panel), also has the CD auto changer in the boot and it has Bose speakers.
I have read a lot about "most" and how difficult it can be to upgrade that system.
How do i know if my system is Most or not.
I am really wanting to move the air con controls and fit a double din unit if possible. All of the pictures that i have found on here show an installation in a car that does not have the cup holders. Do i need to remove the cup holder (not that i will miss them).
I have looked a few double din units with the Pioneer Avic F10 looking very good, but more than i want to spend, (especially after just fitting a new clutch and full service) I only do about 6000 miles a year in the car and am just looking to update the interior and have sat nav and ability to play music from an ipod or similar.
Any comments, recommendations of head unit etc greatly appreciated.

The good news is that CDR22 is a normal wired radio, not MOST, so changing should be simpler.
I've got the same issue with regards to budget. I do about 5000 miles a year also, so I'd struggle to justify spending a grand on a head unit, especially as that's not really where the pleasure comes from in my 996 (it's more the 'go' pedal - perhaps I'd be better off getting that gold plated or something
).

the avic i bought from superfi for 650 by the way - nav, ipod, bluetooth the works !

I've the same unit and didn't want to spend a lot on upgrading. Bought a cassette tape that with a wire that plugs into the ipod and hey presto ipod connection for less than a tenner. Not exactly Bose standard but not bad especially when it has to compete with the engine noise.
I am doing some work with Pioneer GB and they are hopeful that they will have an installation kit for the 996 finished shortly to provide a wiring and surround kit for their double din units to ensure an easy transition.
Mine is being done on the 18th and I will keep the thread updated.
