Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi Guys i need to replace the valve Timing Solenoid on the right hand side of my 98 996... before i lift the cam cover off will i have to drain the oil or will just whats in the cam casing just come out.. Also thinking of making my own Camshaft hold down tool does any one have the dimensions. Do you think i can do all of this with the exhaust on.. Does anyone have a Valve Timing Solenoid they want to sell many thanks Ps which side of the engine is cylinders 1-3 and 4-6 ...many thanks

POST 2Original post

timing cover Easy enough. Drain the oil as it will go everywhere. Yes you can make your own cam hold down tool take the 2 green rubber blank plugs out of the other end to the chain gear. you will see a part of the cylinder head that protudes with an M8 thread in it, this is where the tool locates. it is a plate with 2 lugs that fit into the end of the cams and bolts into the M8 hole. one this is done undo the bolts that secure the cam cover, remove it and change the variocam solenoid. They are handed left and right so you need the one with the correct colour. Whole job 2 hours (apart from making the tool) get the correct Porsche sealant though normal silicone does not cut it use sparingly. good luck.

POST 4Original post

I notice that your car is a 98 model 996er. I have a facelift C4 Tip that has developed a slight leak through the solenoid valve. I had thought it was the seal but on having this replaced the leak kept on and upon investigation the oil is getting out through the solenoid. It is a very minor leak but to fix it means replacing the solenoid. I have heard it said that this can be done more easily on the face lift model than on the older cars. Does anyone knowe if this is true? No one seems very interested in this saying that it is by no means a serious oil leak. Does any one know if it is likely to have knock on effects or is it one that can be left until I can afford to have it fixed possibly at the next service in 8 months time. Thanks.
