I think the best advice is use the buyers guide to check out all the common faults you can do your self and then, if it passes your own buyers guide checks, get an independent inspection done.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

7 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi All, I am going to look at a 4s cab on Wednesday with a view to buying it. Other than the usual FPSH, tyres, shut lines, checking the roof works etc, is there anything in particular I should be looking for, especially on a cab? Thanks, in advance. I will also have alook through the 996 buyers guide. Cheers Tom :?:

POST 2Original post

The owner of the car will give a good indication of how well its been looked after. Good luck. Have you seen many?

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

No this will be my first, looking forward to it.

POST 4Original post

I saw a few to give me an idea of what I could get for my money, then when I saw one I knew it was a good un.

Hi Tom Make sure on the clutch / rear main seal. Ive had 2 water cooled and both ultimately had those problems. If it hasnt been done its a likely expense. Not the end of the world but a stiff clutch is somrthing you really need to check as it ruins a good 996. There is massive debate on the reliabilty and you will hear everything form no probs to always probs with the water and oil meeting each other! The first one i looked at and nearly bought went from needing a full rebiuld on engine costing up top 7 grand, due to ruined liners, to a hunded quid fixed at Porsche bristol for the expansion tank needing replacing.(Another common fault) A so called race specialist wanted to remove the whole engine to check out what was a simple problem. I would always go for a facelift 996 with the glass rear screen a massive improvement over the plastic one, you can see begger all on the plastic screen, and the interior on facelift is a million miles better than pre facelift. S looks lovely in 996 form with that rear extended light, very nice.

POST 6Original post

I think the best advice is use the buyers guide to check out all the common faults you can do your self and then, if it passes your own buyers guide checks, get an independent inspection done. There is also a good buyers guide on the Porsche Club GB Forum.

Tom Go for the best possible with all upgrades if you can I have a 996 c4s cab in arctic with balck leather crested heated seats full alu pack and silver dials with matching steering wheel the lot and I wouldnt sell it for anything. Look out for weepy front rads rear main, expansion tank, these are no problems and when done, that is if they need doing, you will have a top car. try and get one with full history from a main dealer with warranty if possible, take your time and pick the best, dont worry to much about engine horror stories provided they are looked after they are no problem good luck Mike
