Can anyone tell me if the PCM from a 2005 Cayenne will fit in my MY03 996? I know it might mean changing the facia plate but will it work when connected and is the later Cayenne PCM DVD based rather than the CD based version in the 996?

In a MY2005 Cayenne, it will be PCM2.1, the DVD based system, with a separate nav drive - in the front boot of a 997, under the seats in a Cayenne. Also, the version for the Cayenne is slightly bigger than for the 997/987. Therefore, I think you would struggle trying to match it up both electronically and physically in a 996.
