It is illegal in California to use windshield mounts for radar detectors (the rationale is that they block the driver's visibility). When I enquired with Escort about a visor mount for the 9500i, they said that their visor mount

would hold the detector, but that the GPS antenna on the top of the unit needed to have a clear view of the sky or it would not work. For only $4 I figured I'd give it a try and see what happened. I'd hate to have a constable confiscate my detector...
The result was that with the detector mounted on the visor, and the GPS antenna totally blocked by the roof, GPS signals were still acquired. It takes longer to acquire a signal, and it drops out more frequently than it did when I had it on the windshield mount, but it still works acceptably. Problem solved.
I hardwired the system into my fusebox using the Escort Direct Wire Cord ($10) using the system described in this article

. The hardwire job was easy, and it looks great. Be sure to read the comments by doubleclutch at the bottom of the article before you start.
You can also clip it to the front edge of the headliner. This can give you a few more options on the placement of the unit. Note that with it mounted against the roof, you are losing some laser protection, unless you have the separate ZR3 jammer (not an issue if your area does not use laser radar). Had a few other tips here:

Is it just laser protection you are giving up? Or is it all bands - X, K, and Ka that are also blocked?
