But it seems to me someone else tried this and they needed that wire to go high rather low (disconnected)...

Suggestion
I don't think the Carrera uses a relay it uses a control unit (computer) near the DME.

You will see 4 black plastic rivets that you just pull out (you can use a small screw driver) and then you can pull the panel rearward to expose the convertible top control module.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Thanks Loren, It worked I now can raise and lower my top while moving, just click the e brake to the 1st click and it works
Does anybody know where the relay is on a 99 c2 cab that controls the soft top operation. I read on the boxer hacks that if you break off tab #18 on the relay, then you can open and close the soft top while moving as long as you pull the e brake up 1 click.
It shows a picture of a double wide relay from a 97 boxer but I can't find it on my car.
986 relay/control top unit for a Boxster is nothing like a 996 cab, not even in the same place on relay tray #1 as it is on a Boxster. Only 'hack' I know for a 996 is the expensive TechArt relay or a 2003 cab.
Loren, we are going to try and shoot the video for a 996 B&M video. But he wants a sport exhaust. I am a Boxster guy. Will you help?
<a href="http://www.babblers.org/board/main.pl?read=26873" target="_blank">shift install</a>
Loren, can you look at the schematic and see what wire that goes to the control unit is the one that supplies voltage when the car is moving. Thats the wire I want to cut.
thanks, bob
Try the grey/pink wire (Speed). But it seems to me someone else tried this and they needed that wire to go high rather low (disconnected)... or maybe that was what he did for handbrake. You may need to experiment some.

<a href="http://www.sharkworks.com/" target="_blank">http://www.sharkworks.com/</a>
They offer a Mod for the 996 Top but am not sure if it works while car is moving .. they have one touch open Top mod
What my thoughts are:
I have the sharkworks 1 touch top which everyone should have.
As long as you are at a dead stop with the e brake engaged the top will go up or down.
Porsche or TechArt says that we can lower or raise the top at any speed lower than 25 mph.
If you pull the e brake up 1 click the dash light comes on but there is no stopping resistance.
Because the car is moving, voltage is being supplied to the grey/pink SPEED wire, when stopped there is no voltage supplied to this wire and the top will operate as long as the e brake light is on. At least I think thats whats happening.
If this is the case, then cutting the grey/pink wire will fool the control unit into thinking that the car is not moving as no voltage will be supplied to the control unit and I believe that if voltage is supplied on the grey/pink wire then the top will not operate.
If you spend the $628.00 for the TechArt Control unit it will not allow the top to raise or lower at any speed ABOVE 25 mph.
If cutting the grey/pink wire will allow the top to be raised or lowered when moving as long as the e brake is engaged 1 click, then you can be moving at any speed 10 mph or 100 mph so you have to be careful so you don't destroy the top.
I'm not recomending that anyone else do this, Its just something I want to do and I can not be responsible for any damage caused to anyone elses car but mine.
I'll let you know the results as soon as Loren or someone else tells me where the grey/pink wire is located on my 99 Cab.
Lift the carpet and foam cover behind the rear seats. Remove the bolts that hold the aluminum mounting plate so that you can rotate it up. Here is on my coupe:

There is just a carpeted wall behind the rear seats, its not like the picture of Lorens coupe.
Does anybody know where the convertible top module is... Loren, can you help
Thanks Loren, It worked I now can raise and lower my top while moving, just click the e brake to the 1st click and it works
Now, as for how I did it:
1)Park your car and set the e brake. With the convertible top down start raising the convertible top. 1st thing that happens is the convertible top compartment lid lifts and moves all the way rearward, keep raising the top until the convertible top compartment lid just starts to move forward. Then interrupt the closing operation.
2)Remove key from ignition THE CONVERTIBLE TOP MUST NO LONGER BE ELECTRICALLY OPERATED IN THIS POSITION
3)There are right and a left tension cables that goes from the rear of the convertiblt top on the right and left sides to the right and left sides of the deck under the rear of the convertible top.
These 2 cables are 4 inches long and they keep the rear of the convertible top from flipping up. They snap off where they connect to the deck, just push to the side and they will pop off the ball.
4)Lift the rear of the convertible top (the window part) all the way up until it is vertical and have someone hold it there. Now the deck is exposed. You will see 4 black plastic rivets that you just pull out (you can use a small screw driver) and then you can pull the panel rearward to expose the convertible top control module. its the large silver box on the left side of the car mounted on the vertical wall just behind the pop up roll bar, with the 3 seperate connectors going into the bottom of it.
5)The connector all the way to the left with all the small wires going in it is the one that you want.
6)Do not disconect the connector from the control unit, just find the GREY/PINK WIRE and cut it 1 inch before it goes into the connector and put a small piece of black tape on each end and then put a piece of black tape around all the wires.
7)Put the panel back up and push the 4 plastic rivets in and lower the rear of the convertible top that someone was holding and attach the 2 cables to the deck
8)Now put the key in the ignition and raise the top all the way
9) All done, now take out for a test drive. While moving at 10mph raise the e brake 1 click so the e brake light comes on and lower the top. When done release e brake all the way
Please note, This is something I did to my car because I wanted to. I can not be responsible for anything that happens if you do this to your car and don't ever put your top up or down while going over 20 MPH
Enjoy, bob
Bob glad to see it worked, I have the Techart Module your referring to, its FUN!! Sorry I didn't tune in earlier to help you out.. thank God for Loren!! I will forward your info to my buddy, maybe we can play with his cab.
Woohoooo!
I'll try it this weekend. You guys are AWSOME! <img border="0" alt="[thumbsup]" title="" src="graemlins/bigok.gif" />
Now, can you figure out how to operate the top with the remote control on the key? I heard the euro models can do that.
