What is the advantage and the dis-advantage of a short shifter?

Shorter Shifts=less time to shift and they are more precise. The only disadvantage is that they require more effort to shift. Not enough to make it unpleasent. It's the best modification I've ever done.

I have the B&M short shifter and they advertise a 40% reduction in the throw. It is made of all airctaft grade metal and feels very precise when you shift. You won't believe it the first time you put it in reverse! I still have the standard Porsche shifter in my wife's Boxter, so I really notice the difference. IMV, it should be the number one mod anyone should do. '02 Lapis Blue C4S

theoretically, you loose less revs between shifts (quicker shifts)which should net a slight improvement in acceleration times. I can't say what it does for the 996...for my old M5, it shorted throws but increased effort (which I didn't like).

Advantages : - quicker more precise shifts - great when you have to go down through the gears quickly while braking hard for a corner Disadvantages : - more shifting effort - a bit balky when cold In my view, a great (and cheap) mod.
